FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Sophomore Alex Manhardt scored a career-high 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field but Aurora rallied late in the second half to top Marian 77-69 Saturday afternoon in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action at Sadoff Gymnasium.
The game was evenly matched with a total of 15 lead changes and seven ties. MU's largest lead was a 10-point advantage at 12:09 in the first half. In the opening period the Sabres went to Manhardt early and often. The West Bend, Wis. native was 7-of-8 from the floor for 16 points. He also grabbed five rebounds. After 20 minutes of play the Sabres and Spartans went into halftime knotted at 35. For the half MU shot a scorching 48 percent (15-of-31) from the field. Both teams traded baskets to start the second half but at the 12-minute mark Josh Creed hit a jumper and the Sabres opened up a 55-49 advantage. However, over the ensuing six minutes of play AU (14-3, 10-2 NACC) went on a 15-5 run and led 64-60 with 5:49 remaining. With 2:45 on the clock Carvell Oliver converted a mid-range jumper to bring the Sabres to within one at 67-66. AU responded with buckets on its next two possessions to put the game out of reach. Creed finished the afternoon with 17 points and seven rebounds. Nick Kladis scored 23 points to lead AU. Marian (9-9, 6-7 NACC) returns to the hardwood Tuesday at Wisconsin Lutheran.
