MILWAUKEE - Marian University men's basketball (8-10, 7-6 NACC) led late in the second half but the Raiders rallied to defeat the Sabres 72-71.
MSOE led most of the first half and built their lead to as large as 11 points following a 15-5 run before the Sabres ended the half strong. Marian closed out the opening half with an 11-3 run that was capped off by a jumper from junior Tyrese Pinson putting the Sabre deficit at 35-32. Marian then kept themselves in striking distance and used a 10-4 run midway through the second half to take a 48-44 lead with 12:22 remaining off of a three-pointer from freshman Noah Knudsen. After the Radiers knotted the game at 48-48, Marian went on another extended run using an 11-4 run to build their lead to 59-52 with 8:34, their largest lead of the game. A Raider timeout, however, put an abrupt end to the run and the Raiders kept the deficit manageable. The 5-minute mark then proved to be the turning point as MSOE was able to close out the game with a 12-4 stretch taking the lead with 26 ticks left. The Sabres would have a pair of opportunities at the basket in teh final seconds but nothing would fall as the Raiders held on for the come from behind win. The Raiders outshot the Sabres going 22-43 (.512) from the field including 9-17 (.529) from beyond the arc. The Sabres shot 24057 (.421) from the field and had one of their best games at the charity stripe going 19-22 (.864). Senior Alex Manhardt recorded his seventh double-double of the year in the loss with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Pinson also chipped in 11 points. Freshman Logan Hamilton finished with a team-high 16 points off the bench going a perfect 7-7 from the bench. Marian returns home to take on Aurora at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 from Sadoff Gym. FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (8-9, 7-5 NACC) led 31-27 at the half but Rockford managed to rally in the second half defeating the Sabres 66-60.
The first half was tight from the start but Marian used a 7-3 run in the final 2:45 to take the halftime lead. The Sabres out shot the Regents going 13-35 (.371) from the field in the opening half led by junior Tyrese Pinson who had 10 points. After senior Alex Manhardt cut the deficit down to 33-32 at the 16:31 mark of the second half Rockford went on a quick 8-3 run that gave the Regents a seven-point advantage. This small run played a key role as the Regents were able to build a comfortable lead that they held the remainder of the game. The Regents built their lead up to 11 points before the Sabres used an 11-4 run to trim the deficit to 64-60 with 54 seconds remaining following a three-pointer from freshman Tristan Van Ess. The rally was too late, however, as the Regents held the Sabres off the scoreboard the remainder of the game. The Sabres held a 47-42 advantage in rebounds despite the Regents out scoring Marian 40-32 in the paint. Manhardt led the Sabres with 13 points and six rebounds as he joined the 500-career rebound club. Pinson also had 13 points to go with four assists and three steals, while Van Ess had 12 points with a team-high seven rebounds. Marian hits the road traveling to MSOE looking for a season sweep of the Raiders Tuesday, Jan. 23 for a 7 p.m. tip. RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Concordia Chicago was able to force overtime after a big second half comeback but Marian University men's basketball (8-8, 7-4 NACC) were able to rally in overtime to defeat Concordia Chicago 84-83.
Marian shot the lights out in the opening half as they were able to lead 49-30 heading into the break. The Sabres went 19-27 (.704) from the field including 4-7 (.571) from beyond the arc with nine different Sabres scoring. Senior Alex Manhardt led the charge in the strong offensive half recording a double-double in his first 17 minutes of action with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Marian was able to build their lead to as large as 22 points after a three-pointer from junior Ryan Biffert put the Sabres ahead 52-30 with 19:19 left in regulation. From there, the Cougars chipped away at the Marian lead but the Sabres managed to hold a comfortable lead until the final minutes. After a pair of free throws from freshman Tristan Van Ess put Marian ahead 73-65 with 3:07 left in the half, the Cougars rallied using a 10-2 run to send the game into overtime. The Cougars used the momentum from the end of the second half to score the first four points of the overtime, their first lead of the game. A three-pointer from sophomore Trentin Fouse proved to be a momentum shifter, however, as it cut the Marian deficit to one with 2:05 left. From there, the final scoring would all come from the charity stripe where a pair of free throws from freshman Logan Hamilton gave MU their first lead of the overtime and another pair from junior Tyrese Pinson put the Sabres ahead for good with seven seconds remaining. Manhardt closed out the game with 21 points and 19 rebounds, 15 on the defensive end to lead Marian. Van Ess and Fouse came off the bench to chip in 13 points along with Biffert, while Hamilton closed out with 12 points. The Sabres closed out the win 27-58 (.466) from the field but committed 24 turnovers that led to 26 Cougar points. The Marian bench also closed out the game with 44 points. Marian returns home when they host Rockford at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20 from Sadoff Gym. FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (7-8, 6-4 NACC) saw a five-game win streak snapped falling to Benedictine by a 77-63 final.
The Sabres trailed by as much as 18 to open the second half but whenever Marian chipped away at the Eagle lead, Benedictine was able to prevent extended Sabre runs. The Marian bench had a big game scoring 38 points led by freshman Tristan Van Ess who recorded a team-high 18 points and fellow freshman Tavaris McCullough who chipped in 14 points. Marian was held to only 10-36 (.278) shooting in the opening half including 2-12 (.167) from beyond the arc. Marian would heat up in the second stanza as they managed to out score the Eagles 41-38 off of 17-35 (.486) shooting. The Sabres managed to cut the lead down to nine after a layup from junior Tyrese Pinson capped off a quick 7-0 run with 5:09 left to play, but consistent offense from the Eagles prevented any thoughts of a Marian rally. Benedictine closed out the game shooting 27-54 (.500) from the field and 19-23 (.826) from the charity stripe. Senior Alex Manhardt also reached double-digit scoring with 12 points along with a team-high seven rebounds, four on the offensive end. Manhardt also assisted on four baskets with a steal and a block. Marian looks for the sweep of Concordia Chicago on the road Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (7-7, 6-3 NACC) needed a second half rally but ultimately prevailed in overtime defeating Wisconsin Lutheran 92-89.
In a game where the Sabres struggled at the charity stripe, Marian was able to get it done at the free throw line in overtime going a perfect 6-6. A three-point basket from Evan Hansen with 2:25 left in the extra period gave Marian their first lead of overtime at 84-83 and a minute later a pair of free throws from fellow junior Tyrese Pinson gave the Sabres the lead for good. Junior Kelvin Jones would force a Warrior turnover in their next possession and drew a foul to give the Sabres a three-point cushion at 85-88. Jones would score six of the 12 Marian points in overtime and finished the game with a team-high 21 points. Both offenses came out strong to open the game with Wisconsin Lutheran shooting 10-19 (.526) from the field including 4-7 (.571) from beyond the arc, while Marian went 17-35 (.486) and 4-9 (.444) from three-point land. The Warriors were able to build a 44-41 advantage at halftime thanks to the charity stripe where they went 20-27 (.741). The Warriors then used the opening minutes of the second half to build their largest lead of the game at 57-47 with 15:35 left forcing a Marian timeout. A pair of free throws from Ryan Biffert with 10:50 left in regulation sparked a 15-2 run with a pair of dunks from senior Alex Manhardt energizing the crowd. The spurt put the Sabres ahead 72-68 with 6:39 remaining. Marian would only manage to build their lead to as big as six, however, following a pair of free throws from freshman Tavaris McCullough. Wisconsin Lutheran then used a quick 7-0 run to retake the lead at 77-76 with 1:19 in regulation. Freshman Logan Hamilton sank a free throw at the 1:05 mark to put the game at a 77-77 draw and ultimately force overtime. The turnover battle tilted heavily toward Marian with the Sabres forcing 23 turnovers as MU out scored the Warriors 31-13 in points off turnovers. The Sabres also dominated down low as they out scored WLC 46-26 in the paint. Hansen chipped in 16 points in the victory, while Pinson and Manhardt each added 10 points. Manhardt also nearly missed a double-double with eight rebounds to go with three blocks and four assists. Defensively, Pinson, Jones and McCullough each had three steals to lead Marian to a season-high 17 steals. Marian closes out a three-game homestand hosting Benedictine at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13. FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (6-7, 5-3 NACC) continued their strong play of late defeating Dominican 77-65 at home in NACC action.
The Stars hung around with the Sabres for most of the game but the Sabres were able to pull away late as they won their fourth straight game. Marian shot 29-53 (.547) in the opening half but Dominican shot just as well going 23-51 (.451) from the field including 11-23 (.478) from beyond the arc as the Sabres held a 39-36 advantage into halftime. Marian saw their lead cut to one to open the second half but the Sabres used an 11-2 run building their lead to double-digits at 53-43 and 13:31 left in the game. Dominican wouldn't go away quietly, however, as the Stars responded with an 11-0 spurt that gave them a 54-53 advantage with 9:18 left in action. A three-pointer from junior Tyrese Pinson broke up the Star spurt and was the beginning of a 17-2 run that put Marian ahead 70-56 with only 3:01 left to play. Five different Sabres scored during the run that proved to be enough for Marian to cruise to the NACC win. Senior Alex Manhardt once again had another big game with his fifth double-double of the season. Manhardt went 7-10 (.700) from the field as he scored a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds. Pinson finished in double-figures chipping in 15 points. The Sabres controlled play down low for most of the game as MU out rebounded the Stars 35-22 and had 18 second chance points. (SabreAthletics.com) - Senior forward Alex Manhardt was named the NACC Player of the Week, as voted on by the league sports information directors, announced the conference office Tuesday.
Manhardt becomes the first Sabre to earn the conference weekly award since 2014 after registering his fourth double-double of the season in a win against Concordia Chicago. The West Bend, Wis. native shot 7-10 (.700) from the field in the win with a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Manhardt also added two assists and a block in the victory that gave the Sabres an even conference ledger. ROCKFORD, Ill. - Marian University men's basketball (5-7, 4-3 NACC) shot a season-high 45.5-percent from beyond the arc as the Sabres won their third straight game 91-83 over Rockford.
Six different Sabres made a bucket from beyond the three-point line in the win led by junior Will Olewinski who shot 3-6 (.500) from three-point land as he finished with 11 points. The Sabre offense started especially fast shooting 20-33 (.606) from the field in the opening half including 7-11 (.636) from beyond the arc. After starting the game with a 22-22 stalemate and 9:58 remaining in the opening half, Marian scored the game's next 13 points as MU took the first big lead of the game at 35-22 with 6:39 left in the half. The Sabres followed that up with a quick 10-2 run near the end of the half to build their lead out to 54-36 heading into the break. The Marian offense continued to roll to open the second half as a layup from senior Alex Manhardt with 7:10 left to play gave Marian a game-high 27 point lead. The Regents closed out the game strong as they were able to cut into the Marian lead but the Sabres were able to cruise to the 91-83 road win. The Marian depth proved to be a big factor in the victory as the MU bench came up with 37 points coming from seven different Sabres. Junior Tyrese Pinson led the way for the Sabres as he scored a season-high 17 points, the second time in the past three games he scored double-figures, to go with seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. Fellow junior Evan Hansen would chip in 15 points. Olewinski and Manhardt also had seven rebounds as Marian out rebounded the Regents by a slim 41-40 margin. Marian returns home to take on Dominican at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6. FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (4-7, 3-3 NACC) scored 90 points for the second time this season defeating Concordia Chicago 90-80 at home.

The Sabres also had their second best night from beyond the arc where they went 10-28 (.357). The Sabres led from start to finish jumping out to an early 17-8 lead after a three-pointer from junior Will Olewinski to start the game. Marian then used an 18-2 later in the half to build their lead out to 38-15 with 6:57 remaining in the first half following a layup from senior Alex Manhardt. Marian closed out the opening half shooting 19-36 (.528) including 7-17 (.412) from three-point land as they led CUC 51-35 heading to the locker rooms. The Sabres continued to hold their significant advantage to open the second half with back-to-back buckets from junior Evan Hansen building the Marian lead out to a game-high 26 points with 12:34 left in action. From there, the Cougars were able to chip away at the Sabre lead but Marian was able to hold off a late rally for the NACC win. Marian held a big advantage in the paint where they outscored the Cougars 40-24. Five Sabres scored double-digit points led by Manhardt who had a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Marian hits the road for a NACC matchup at Rockford Wednesday, Jan. 3 with tip scheduled for 5 p.m. BELOIT, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (3-7, 2-3 NACC) trailed by as much as 10 but rallied to defeat Beloit 70-68 to close out the first half of the season.
The Sabre offense was clicking in the win with the second highest field goal percentage in a game so far this season shooting 27-55 (.491) from the field. They also had their most efficient game of the season beyond the arc where they shot 8-20 (.400) and at the charity stripe 8-10 (.800). After trailing 63-61 with 4:10 remaining in regulation, Marian closed out the game with a 9-5 run to earn the non-conference victory. Junior Tyrese Pinson hit a three-pointer and converted a layup, while senior Alex Manhardt and junior Kelvin Jones each made a pair of free throws to complete the strong finish. Pinson and Jones went on to lead the Sabres in scoring with 15 and 14 points, respectively. The two teams started the game with a 20-20 stalemate with 7:54 left in action before Beloit took the first sizeable lead with a 17-7 run. Freshman Tavaris McCullough would hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds to cut into the deficit and provide the Sabres momentum going into the second half. That momentum proved to be big as Marian opened the second half scoring the first nine points and taking a 39-37 lead. Four different Sabres scored during the run, which was capped off by a layup from Jones. The Sabres built their lead to as large as 49-43 with 13:51 left to play but an 11-0 run from the Buccaneers with 10:28 remaining quickly turned the momentum. Layups in the next three possessions from Manhardt, McCullough and Jones, respectively, helped Marian regain the lead and from there, neither side held a lead larger than three the remainder of the game. The Sabres won the turnover battle forcing 16 Beloit turnovers that translated into 23 points. Marian held the Buccanneers to only four points off of turnovers. Manhardt, McCullough and junior Evan Hansen each chipped in 10 points in the win to round out the five Sabres who scored double-digits. Manhardt also added five assists, while Jones led MU with six rebounds. Marian returns to action Saturday, Dec. 30 at home when the Sabres host Concordia Chicago at 2 p.m. to open a NACC doubleheader. |
