FOND DU LAC, Wis. - It was an impressive effort on both sides of the ball as Marian men's basketball (1-9, 0-5 NACC) defeated Finlandia University by a final score of 77-63 for their first win of the season.
The Sabres would come out of the gate fast causing Lion turnovers which Marian would capitalize on the offensive side of the ball. Marian would score nine unanswered points which led to a Finlandia timeout. Marian would not surrender the lead for the rest of the half as they entered intermission 43-29. In the second half, Marian picked up where they left off as they would continue to force Lion turnovers converting into Sabre points. However, Finlandia would not give up as they slowly chipped away at the Sabre lead. At the 6:22 mark of the half, a Finlandia three-pointer would cut the game to under 10 marking the first time since early in the first half the Sabre lead was single digits. The Lions would cut the lead to as little as six with under 3 minutes left to play off back-to-back layups. A Marian timeout proved to be a big factor as the MU defense held Finlandia scoreless the remainder of the game following the timeout. The Sabre defense would collect 16 steals forcing a total of 22 Lion turnovers resulting in 36 points off turnovers. Marian would also shoot 28-58 (.483) from the field. Sophomore Evan Hansen led the way for Marian finishing the game shooting 11-13 (.846) for a career-high 25 points. Sophomore Tyrese Pinson recorded his first double-double of the season finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Marian concludes 2016 at home on December 31 as they welcome NACC foe Dominican University to Sadoff gymnasium for a 3:15 p.m. tip. Comments are closed.
