SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - The Marian University men's basketball team needed overtime but were able to outscore Lakeland 17-11 in the extra period to defeat Lakeland for an 87-81 road victory in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.
The win pushes the Sabres to 5-7 on the year with a 2-5 conference ledger, while the Muskies fall to 8-4 with a 4-3 NACC record. The Muskies started fast opening the game with a 14-2 run in the first four minutes of the game. Marian answered the fast start scoring 13 of the next 17 points to cut the LC lead down to 18-15 with 11:15 left to play in the half. Lakeland then extended their lead out to seven points at 22-15 before Marian closed out the final nine minutes of the half with an 18-4 run capped off by an Alex Manhardt layup that gave MU a 33-28 advantage heading into the locker room. Josh Creed would lead the Sabres in the opening stanza with 14 points shooting 4-5 from the field. Marian would maintain their first half lead extending the advantage out to as large as nine on two occasions before the Muskies scored the final four points of regulation to force overtime at a 70-70 tally. The Sabres jumped out to the first lead in the extra period using a 7-2 run to take a 77-72 advantage with 3:12 remaining. Marian managed to hold onto the early lead going 9-13 from the charity stripe in overtime to seal the 87-81 road win. As a team, MU finished the game with a 38.6-percent field goal percentage shooting 9-23 (.391) from beyond the arc and 24-28 (.857) from the free throw line. Creed finished with a career-high 32 points shooting 9-18 from the field and 12-13 from the free throw line. Manhardt and Reggie Roemer each scored double digit points with 14 and 10 points, respectively, while Carvell Oliver put together a solid night with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds and four steals. Marian will next return to Sadoff Gymnasium as they host Concordia Chicago Saturday, Jan. 9 for a 2 p.m. tip-off. Comments are closed.
