Marian University coach Mark Boyle recently picked up a verbal commitment from one of the state's top class of 2014 forwards as Alex Manhardt of West Bend East informed Boyle he would play basketball for the NCAA Division III Sabres. Manhardt (6-6) is an athletic, mobile forward who runs the floor and uses his athleticism to attack the glass. He averaged 11.9 points per game as a senior for a West Bend East squad that went 16-7 and finished second to WIAA Division 2 state champion Wisconsin Lutheran in the Wisconsin Little Ten Conference standings. Manhardt earned second-team all-league recognition as a senior and started for coach Ryan Tomczyk in each of the past two seasons. Logan Velasquez is a 6'6 forward from Plainfield Central High School in Plainfield, Illinois. Velasquez was a two year starter, two-time all-conference selection and team captain as a senior at Plainfield Central. His best game came this past season against Plainfield North when he scored 29 points and hauled in 12 rebounds. In addition, Velasquez is the school's all-time leading rebounder with 622 career rebounds.

Marian University came within an eyelash of upsetting host and perennial national power UW-Stevens Point in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on March 7. The Sabres had two opportunities in the closing seconds of the game to take the lead, but came up just short both times as the Pointers registered a pulsating 66-64 victory. Marian, which won the Nothern Athletics Conference regular season and tournament titles, finished the year with a 22-7 record under veteran coach Mark Boyle. Three seniors who averaged in double figures will graduate this spring in Cody Veleke of Oakfield, Sam Koslowski of St. Mary Central and Jeff Harris of Chicago. So a solid recruiting class is of major importance to Boyle and his coaching staff. The Sabres got off to a good start with their 2014 recruiting class when Freedom senior Mike Waters committed to the Marian program. An attacking wing guard/forward, the 6-3 Waters earned third-team all-league honors in the Eastern Valley Conference as a senior when he averaged 9.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game for coach John Van Rossum and the Irish. Waters helped Freedom to a 17-6 record with his relentless drives to the basket. He led the team in both free-throw attempts (103) and free-throws made (67). |
