FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (7-8, 6-4 NACC) saw a five-game win streak snapped falling to Benedictine by a 77-63 final.
The Sabres trailed by as much as 18 to open the second half but whenever Marian chipped away at the Eagle lead, Benedictine was able to prevent extended Sabre runs. The Marian bench had a big game scoring 38 points led by freshman Tristan Van Ess who recorded a team-high 18 points and fellow freshman Tavaris McCullough who chipped in 14 points. Marian was held to only 10-36 (.278) shooting in the opening half including 2-12 (.167) from beyond the arc. Marian would heat up in the second stanza as they managed to out score the Eagles 41-38 off of 17-35 (.486) shooting. The Sabres managed to cut the lead down to nine after a layup from junior Tyrese Pinson capped off a quick 7-0 run with 5:09 left to play, but consistent offense from the Eagles prevented any thoughts of a Marian rally. Benedictine closed out the game shooting 27-54 (.500) from the field and 19-23 (.826) from the charity stripe. Senior Alex Manhardt also reached double-digit scoring with 12 points along with a team-high seven rebounds, four on the offensive end. Manhardt also assisted on four baskets with a steal and a block. Marian looks for the sweep of Concordia Chicago on the road Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (7-7, 6-3 NACC) needed a second half rally but ultimately prevailed in overtime defeating Wisconsin Lutheran 92-89.
In a game where the Sabres struggled at the charity stripe, Marian was able to get it done at the free throw line in overtime going a perfect 6-6. A three-point basket from Evan Hansen with 2:25 left in the extra period gave Marian their first lead of overtime at 84-83 and a minute later a pair of free throws from fellow junior Tyrese Pinson gave the Sabres the lead for good. Junior Kelvin Jones would force a Warrior turnover in their next possession and drew a foul to give the Sabres a three-point cushion at 85-88. Jones would score six of the 12 Marian points in overtime and finished the game with a team-high 21 points. Both offenses came out strong to open the game with Wisconsin Lutheran shooting 10-19 (.526) from the field including 4-7 (.571) from beyond the arc, while Marian went 17-35 (.486) and 4-9 (.444) from three-point land. The Warriors were able to build a 44-41 advantage at halftime thanks to the charity stripe where they went 20-27 (.741). The Warriors then used the opening minutes of the second half to build their largest lead of the game at 57-47 with 15:35 left forcing a Marian timeout. A pair of free throws from Ryan Biffert with 10:50 left in regulation sparked a 15-2 run with a pair of dunks from senior Alex Manhardt energizing the crowd. The spurt put the Sabres ahead 72-68 with 6:39 remaining. Marian would only manage to build their lead to as big as six, however, following a pair of free throws from freshman Tavaris McCullough. Wisconsin Lutheran then used a quick 7-0 run to retake the lead at 77-76 with 1:19 in regulation. Freshman Logan Hamilton sank a free throw at the 1:05 mark to put the game at a 77-77 draw and ultimately force overtime. The turnover battle tilted heavily toward Marian with the Sabres forcing 23 turnovers as MU out scored the Warriors 31-13 in points off turnovers. The Sabres also dominated down low as they out scored WLC 46-26 in the paint. Hansen chipped in 16 points in the victory, while Pinson and Manhardt each added 10 points. Manhardt also nearly missed a double-double with eight rebounds to go with three blocks and four assists. Defensively, Pinson, Jones and McCullough each had three steals to lead Marian to a season-high 17 steals. Marian closes out a three-game homestand hosting Benedictine at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13. FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (6-7, 5-3 NACC) continued their strong play of late defeating Dominican 77-65 at home in NACC action.
The Stars hung around with the Sabres for most of the game but the Sabres were able to pull away late as they won their fourth straight game. Marian shot 29-53 (.547) in the opening half but Dominican shot just as well going 23-51 (.451) from the field including 11-23 (.478) from beyond the arc as the Sabres held a 39-36 advantage into halftime. Marian saw their lead cut to one to open the second half but the Sabres used an 11-2 run building their lead to double-digits at 53-43 and 13:31 left in the game. Dominican wouldn't go away quietly, however, as the Stars responded with an 11-0 spurt that gave them a 54-53 advantage with 9:18 left in action. A three-pointer from junior Tyrese Pinson broke up the Star spurt and was the beginning of a 17-2 run that put Marian ahead 70-56 with only 3:01 left to play. Five different Sabres scored during the run that proved to be enough for Marian to cruise to the NACC win. Senior Alex Manhardt once again had another big game with his fifth double-double of the season. Manhardt went 7-10 (.700) from the field as he scored a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds. Pinson finished in double-figures chipping in 15 points. The Sabres controlled play down low for most of the game as MU out rebounded the Stars 35-22 and had 18 second chance points. ROCKFORD, Ill. - Marian University men's basketball (5-7, 4-3 NACC) shot a season-high 45.5-percent from beyond the arc as the Sabres won their third straight game 91-83 over Rockford.
Six different Sabres made a bucket from beyond the three-point line in the win led by junior Will Olewinski who shot 3-6 (.500) from three-point land as he finished with 11 points. The Sabre offense started especially fast shooting 20-33 (.606) from the field in the opening half including 7-11 (.636) from beyond the arc. After starting the game with a 22-22 stalemate and 9:58 remaining in the opening half, Marian scored the game's next 13 points as MU took the first big lead of the game at 35-22 with 6:39 left in the half. The Sabres followed that up with a quick 10-2 run near the end of the half to build their lead out to 54-36 heading into the break. The Marian offense continued to roll to open the second half as a layup from senior Alex Manhardt with 7:10 left to play gave Marian a game-high 27 point lead. The Regents closed out the game strong as they were able to cut into the Marian lead but the Sabres were able to cruise to the 91-83 road win. The Marian depth proved to be a big factor in the victory as the MU bench came up with 37 points coming from seven different Sabres. Junior Tyrese Pinson led the way for the Sabres as he scored a season-high 17 points, the second time in the past three games he scored double-figures, to go with seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. Fellow junior Evan Hansen would chip in 15 points. Olewinski and Manhardt also had seven rebounds as Marian out rebounded the Regents by a slim 41-40 margin. Marian returns home to take on Dominican at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6. FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (4-7, 3-3 NACC) scored 90 points for the second time this season defeating Concordia Chicago 90-80 at home.
Marian shot the lights out in the win going 33-66 (.500) from the field, their second-highest field goal percentage in a game this season. The Sabres also had their second best night from beyond the arc where they went 10-28 (.357). The Sabres led from start to finish jumping out to an early 17-8 lead after a three-pointer from junior Will Olewinski to start the game. Marian then used an 18-2 later in the half to build their lead out to 38-15 with 6:57 remaining in the first half following a layup from senior Alex Manhardt. Marian closed out the opening half shooting 19-36 (.528) including 7-17 (.412) from three-point land as they led CUC 51-35 heading to the locker rooms. The Sabres continued to hold their significant advantage to open the second half with back-to-back buckets from junior Evan Hansen building the Marian lead out to a game-high 26 points with 12:34 left in action. From there, the Cougars were able to chip away at the Sabre lead but Marian was able to hold off a late rally for the NACC win. Marian held a big advantage in the paint where they outscored the Cougars 40-24. Five Sabres scored double-digit points led by Manhardt who had a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Olewinski and Hansen each had 12 points, while junior Kelvin Jones scored 11 and freshman Tavaris McCullough came off the bench for 11 points. Marian hits the road for a NACC matchup at Rockford Wednesday, Jan. 3 with tip scheduled for 5 p.m. BELOIT, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (3-7, 2-3 NACC) trailed by as much as 10 but rallied to defeat Beloit 70-68 to close out the first half of the season.
The Sabre offense was clicking in the win with the second highest field goal percentage in a game so far this season shooting 27-55 (.491) from the field. They also had their most efficient game of the season beyond the arc where they shot 8-20 (.400) and at the charity stripe 8-10 (.800). After trailing 63-61 with 4:10 remaining in regulation, Marian closed out the game with a 9-5 run to earn the non-conference victory. Junior Tyrese Pinson hit a three-pointer and converted a layup, while senior Alex Manhardt and junior Kelvin Jones each made a pair of free throws to complete the strong finish. Pinson and Jones went on to lead the Sabres in scoring with 15 and 14 points, respectively. The two teams started the game with a 20-20 stalemate with 7:54 left in action before Beloit took the first sizeable lead with a 17-7 run. Freshman Tavaris McCullough would hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds to cut into the deficit and provide the Sabres momentum going into the second half. That momentum proved to be big as Marian opened the second half scoring the first nine points and taking a 39-37 lead. Four different Sabres scored during the run, which was capped off by a layup from Jones. The Sabres built their lead to as large as 49-43 with 13:51 left to play but an 11-0 run from the Buccaneers with 10:28 remaining quickly turned the momentum. Layups in the next three possessions from Manhardt, McCullough and Jones, respectively, helped Marian regain the lead and from there, neither side held a lead larger than three the remainder of the game. The Sabres won the turnover battle forcing 16 Beloit turnovers that translated into 23 points. Marian held the Buccanneers to only four points off of turnovers. Manhardt, McCullough and junior Evan Hansen each chipped in 10 points in the win to round out the five Sabres who scored double-digits. Manhardt also added five assists, while Jones led MU with six rebounds. Marian returns to action Saturday, Dec. 30 at home when the Sabres host Concordia Chicago at 2 p.m. to open a NACC doubleheader. Junior Kelvin Jones provided the offensive spark in that final minute and 53-second stretch scoring five points to force the first overtime of the game. The opening overtime saw the Muskies jump out to an early four-point lead but a pair of buckets from senior Alex Manhardt and a jumper from Jones matched Lakeland to force a second overtime. Marian would lead most of the second overtime but a jumper from the Muskies with just seven seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner in a 78-76 final. Manhardt went on to finish the game with a game-high 27 points and 19 rebounds, 16 on the defensive end. Jones joined Manhardt in double-digit scoring with 12 points. The Lakeland offense was clicking in the opening half as they went on to shoot 12-27 (.44) from the field, while also holding MU to 10-32 (.313) shooting as the Muskies led 31-24 at the half. The Muskies opened the second half with a pair of free throws to build their largest lead of the game at nine with a 33-24 score and 18:33 left to play. A dunk from Manhardt, however, provided a spark for the Sabres as Marian went on a 9-0 lead to tie the game at 33-33 with 15:20 remaining in regulation. Marian controlled play down low outrebounding the Muskies 52-50 and outscoring Lakeland in the paint by a 38-30 margin. The free throw line was once again unkind to the Sabres as Marian would only go 12-28 (.429) from the charity stripe. Marian closes out the first half of the season on the road at Beloit Wednesday, Dec. 20 for a 7 p.m. tip. MADISON, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (2-6, 2-2 NACC) couldn't find a way to slow down an Edgewood offense that shot 29-52 (.558) from the field in an 83-60 road loss.
The Sabres jumped out early on the Eagles holding a consistent lead for the first part of the first half. The Sabres would hold an 18-11 advantage with 10:20 remaining following a jumper from freshman Tristan Van Ess that forced an Edgewood timeout. Freshman Tavaris McCullough then made the next three baskets for the Sabres, layups in the paint as Marian continued to lead at 24-15 with 6:11 left in the opening stanza. From there, however, the Eagles chipped away at the Sabre lead and closed out the half on a 19-5 run to take a 34-29 advantage into the break. Marian was able to keep the deficit manageable to open the second half but Edgewood would use a 13-2 run in the middle of the second half to take a 61-43 lead with 8:41 left to play. This deficit proved to be too much as Edgewood would cruise to the NACC win at home. Junior Kelvin Jones and Will Olewinski led the Sabres offensively with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Marian returns home Saturday, Dec. 16 when the Sabres take on Lakeland for a 4 p.m. tip. The Sabre offense shot over 50-percent from the field in each half as they went on to shoot 35-68 (.515) from the field. After trailing by six at halftime, Concordia Wisconsin would cut the Sabre lead down to as little as two at 56-54 with 15:41 left. The next eight minutes was all Sabres, however, as Marian was able to go on a 23-4 run that put MU ahead 77-60 with 7:54 remaining. Marian built their lead to as large as 25 in the final minutes as they were able to cruise the rest of the way to the win. The Sabre bench played a big role as they would manage to score 49 points. Juniors Marcus Kadinger and Evan Hansen each had 10 points to lead the Marian bench in scoring. Freshman Will Olewinski shot 5-11 from the field to lead the team with 15 points, while junior Tyrese Pinsonadded 13 points. A total of 13 Sabres recorded points in the victory. A fast start aided the Sabres as they opened the game forcing three turnovers and jumped out to a 12-4 advantage forcing a Falcon timeout. MU finished the game forcing 16 CUW turnovers that translated into 21 points. Each offense shot the lights out to open the game as the Falcons went 16-30 (.533) from the field, while Marian went 21-41 (.512) including seven made three-pointers. The Sabres tied a season-high with 10 made three-pointers in the win. Marian hits the road for Edgewood Saturday, Dec. 9 with tip scheduled for 2 p.m. HANCOCK, Mich. - Marian University men's basketball (1-5, 1-1 NACC) led 27-20 at halftime but an early push to open the second half gave Finlandia a 65-57 win.
The Sabres took the first sizeable lead for the game when they scored seven straight points in the middle of the first half that gave MU a 16-6 lead. A layup from freshman Tavaris McCulloughcapped off the run as he went on to score a team-high 15 points. McCullough would have a stretch where scored eight straight Marian points as the Sabres would build their lead out to as large as 13 with 6:43 left in the first half. After senior Alex Manhardt opened the second half with a dunk, Finlandia would score the next 10 points and take a 30-29 lead. A free throw from freshman Justin Wilson would tie the game back at 30-30 but the Lions would once again score 10 straight points to push their run to 20-1 and take a 40-30 lead. Junior Kelvin Jones would make a layup with 10:49 left in the game to cut the Sabre deficit down to four but the Lions would rebound and hold the lead the remainder of the game. Jones would go on to finish with 10 points off the bench. The Lions finished shooting 21-50 (.420) from the field, while holding the Sabre offense to only 20-69 (.290) from the field and only two made three-pointers. The Marian defense won the turnover battle forcing 21 turnovers that led to 20 points. The Sabre bench also had a big game outscoring the Lion bench 34-9. Manhardt continued to dominate down low with a team-high 11 rebounds to go with eight points.
