Jameris Smith is a 5'10 point guard from Warren Township High School in Gurnee, Illinois. As a junior, Jameris was the sixth man at Warren and helped take the Blue Devils to the state tournament. They lost in the 4A championship game 48-39 to Chicago Simeon.
As a senior, Smith was the Blue Devils starting point guard and helped lead Warren to a 26-4 overall record. Jameris was named Honorable Mention All-Conference and also Honorable Mention All-Area in Lake County. By: Mark Miller, Wissports.net
Marian University in Fond du Lac picked up a local recruit with an impressive resume recently when Valders senior Drew Binversie informed Sabres’ coach Mark Boyle he would attend the Northern Athletics Conference school and play basketball. Binversie (6-0) is a rock-solid guard who led Valders in scoring at 16.2 points per game and was named the Most Valuable Player in the highly competitive Olympian Conference. Binversie earned first-team all-Olympian honors in each of the past two seasons. A four-year varsity performer at Valders for coach Ron Nesper, Binversie scored a career-high 35 points in a 67-62 victory over Kiel on December 27. He led Valders to a 15-3 mark in the Olympian and a 19-5 record in all games. Binversie joins Winneconne senior Brad Koth and Oostburg senior Alex Stecker in the incoming recruiting class at Marian, which finished 10-16 last season without a senior on its roster. Oostburg senior Alex Stecker (left) and Winneconne senior Brad Koth (right) have decided to continue their education and play basketball for Marian University in Fond du Lac. Stecker played four years of varsity basketball for coach Kevin Bruggink at Oostburg. During his time with the Flying Dutchmen, they won 88 of 103 games, including two Central Lakeshore Conference championships. A 5-8 point guard who makes intelligent decisions and defends with a purpose, Stecker averaged 13.1 ppg as a senior and earned unanimous first-team all-league honors. He also earned first-team all-conference recognition as a junior and second-team laurels as a sophomore. Stecker follows in the footsteps of several former Oostburg standouts to play college basketball for coach Mark Boyle at Marian, including current team members Mike and Mark Keller. Koth is a 6-1 wing guard who was voted first-team all-league in the Eastern Valley Conference by the conference’s nine coaches. He led Winneconne in scoring at 17.3 ppg and played three years of varsity basketball for the Wolves. Koth scored a career-high 26 points in a loss to Freedom late in the season and helped a very young Winneconne squad to a 9-14 record under first-year coach Nate Ryf. Twins Mike and Mark Keller of Oostburg highlight a talented incoming recruiting class for coach Mark Boyle and the Marian University Sabres. The Keller twins played integral roles in helping Oostburg capture the Central Lakeshore Conference championship while also earning a trip to the WIAA Division 4 State Tournament. Joining the Kellers in the Sabres’ incoming recruiting class are Jordan Beck of Lomira, Jake Coenen of Kimberly and the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley and Dickie Knar of Mundelein High School near Chicago. “I think these guys will definitely help,” Boyle said. “We’ve struggled the last two years so we needed to bring in some really good players. “The Keller twins give us a lot of versatility as they are both able to play the two-through-four positions. We have a group of really good incoming kids who will be great additions to our program.” Mike Keller, a 6-foot-5 forward, led Oostburg in scoring at 13.7 points per game while also averaging 4.7 rebounds per game. He earned unanimous first-team all-league honors while helping the Flying Dutchmen to a 26-1 overall record and a 16-0 mark in league games. Mark Keller, also a 6-5 forward, averaged 7.0 points and 2.7 rebounds per contest for coach Kevin Bruggink and picked up second-team all-conference honors. Beck, a 6-1 guard, received unanimous first-team all-conference recognition in the Wisconsin Flyway Conference after averaging 18.0 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game for coach Tyler Witkowski. A four-year varsity performer, Beck scored a career-high 32 points in a 68-63 victory over Montello on November 30, 2010. Knar is the grandson of former Marian coach Dick Knar and the son of former Fond du Lac standout Dick Knar Jr., Knar is an extremely quick and heady 5-9 point guard. |
