MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (SabreAthletics.com) – The stage was set for another buzzer-beating attempt for the Marian University men's basketball team after host Wisconsin Lutheran College took a 58-57 lead with 8.5 seconds remaining, but junior Drew Binversie's baseline jumper rimmed out and the Warriors escaped with a win by the narrowest of margins inside the Recreation Complex this evening, Jan. 27.
With the score tied at 56-56, Marian sophomore Brandon McCullum gathered a huge offensive rebound to extend the play and was fouled with less than 10 seconds remaining. He split two free throws to give the Sabres (9-10, 8-6 NACC) a one-point advantage. On the missed free throw, WLC's Brett Lubbe was fouled trying to get the rebound and converted both free throw attempts, which proved to be the difference. Marian was led by Josh Creed, who poured in 14 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the way. McCullum added a season-high 12 points, while Carvell Oliver and Montrell Hobbs chipped in eight and nine points, respectively. Marian led by as many as four points when Creed's layup made it 54-50 with 4:08 remaining in the second half. WLC shot just 32.4 percent (11-for-34) from the field, but garnered 14 more shot attempts thanks to 11 first-half offensive rebounds. Marian finished the game 45.5 percent (20-for-44) from the field, including 2-for-10 from three-point range. It held the Warriors to 33.3 percent (20-for-60), while going 4-for-15 from downtown.
