DE PERE, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's basketball team got off to a slow start and never recovered as host St. Norbert College recorded a 67-47 victory to open the Nicolet National Bank Holiday Tournament inside Schuldes Sports Center this evening, Dec. 29. The Sabres shot just 27 percent in the first half before finishing the game only 30.4 percent (14-for-46) from the field, including 7-of-19 from three and 12-of-18 from the free throw line. Senior Jake Coenen was the lone Sabre in double figures, scoring 12 points off the bench, while the starting front court recorded just six total points as St. Norbert controlled the paint by a margin score of 26-6. With the win, St. Norbert improved to 6-3 on the season, while Marian fell to 4-7 with the loss. The Green Knights connected on 13 first half field goals, including four from downtown to jump ahead 31-16 at halftime. The lead would continue to grow in the second half while turnovers plagued the Sabres. St. Norbert was able to turn 17 Marian miscues into 14 points throughout the contest. The Sabres will look to bounce back in the tournament consolation against Northwestern (Minn.), which fell to No. 6 Whitewater, 71-61, earlier this evening.
