SHEBOYGAN, Wisconsin (SabreAthletics.com) – For the third straight time, the Marian University men's basketball team took down NACC rival Lakeland College, erasing a one-point halftime deficit to win handily, 82-65, inside Woltzen Gymnasium, this evening.
The Sabres (8-8, 7-4 NACC) shot over 54 percent from the field and outrebounded the Muskies (11-5, 7-4 NACC) 39-22 in the win. Josh Creed led the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Montrell Hobbs added 19 points, while Drew Binversie chipped in 16 points, four rebounds and five assists. With under 9 minutes to go, Brandon Hagenow knocked down a triple to cut the Marian lead to 56-54, but Creed came right back with an answer to bump the advantage back up to five points and sparked an 11-2 run in the process. Brandon McCullum's three-pointer from the corner preceded an old-fashioned three-point play by Mike Keller to make it 67-56 with 6:20 remaining. Creed pushed the lead to 73-60 with 2:31 remaining with one of his patented slashing lay-ins from the right wing and the Sabres never looked back. Marian trailed by as many as nine points in the first half after a Joey Burris three-pointer made it 21-12 with 9:21 remaining in the first half. The Sabres would counter that deficit with an 8-0 run backed by three's from Connor Morovits and Alex Stecker to close the gap. The Muskies would take a 36-35 lead into halftime. Marian shot an identical 13-for-24 in each half to finish 54.2 percent from the field. Outside of the big three, McCullum finished with eight points, followed by Stecker with five points, three rebounds and seven assists. Hagenow led Lakeland with 13 points on 2-for-4 shooting and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Kurt Jansen added 12 points before fouling out in 29 minutes of action, while Travis Kell chipped in nine points and five rebounds. The Muskies shot 42.3 percent (22-for-52) as a team. Marian looks to build its momentum from tonight as it plays host to Benedictine this Saturday, Jan. 17. For the first time since 1991, Marian basketball will be featured on the airwaves as KFIZ 1450 will broadcast the men's/women's doubleheader. KFIZ personality Wade Bates will have the play-by-play, while Kyle Krueger will supply the color commentary. Tip-off for the men's game is slated for 4:15 p.m. Comments are closed.
