FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – All 12 Sabres that saw action recorded at least one basket as the Marian University men's basketball team won handily in a 77-53 blowout of Northland International University to close out non-conference play inside Sadoff Gymnasium, this afternoon, Jan. 26. Marian used a balanced scoring attack and big runs in each half to put away the visiting Pioneers on Parents' Day this afternoon. Freshman Brad Koth led the Sabres in scoring with 12 points, while eight other players recorded five or more points. Micah Baines led three Pioneers in double figures with 17 points. Marian won for the eighth time in its last 10 games and improved to 12-8 overall, while NIU dropped to 12-7 with the loss. Leading 23-15 with nearly 7:30 left in the first half, the Sabre embarked on a 13-0 run to make it a 21-point lead in less than four minutes. Richard Knar capped the run with his second three of the game. Marian would take a 39-22 advantage into the break after shooting 53.6 percent (15-for-28) from the floor, including 7-for-11 from long distance. Knar and Alex Gomez tallied eight points to lead all Marian scorers. The second half was much of the same. Leading comfortably, 51-36, Marian then went on an impressive 19-0 run, holding NIU without a single point for more than six-and-a-half minutes, to make the score an insurmountable margin of 70-36. The Sabres made 11 three-pointers in the contest, marking their season-high and eclipsing their previous high of 10, which they achieved against MSOE last Wednesday, Jan. 23. Jake Coenen knocked down three triples to lead all outside shooters and finished with nine points. Marian's bench outscored NIU by a whopping, 45-6, while converting 20 Pioneer turnovers into 26 points as well. The Sabres held the Pioneers to their third-lowest output of the season in the winning effort. Marian will jump back into Northern Athletics Conference play this Tuesday, Jan. 29, when Maranatha Baptist (5-13, 1-10 NAC) invades Sadoff Gymnasium. The Sabres defeated the Crusaders, 83-77, in Watertown back on Jan. 17. Tuesday's tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Comments are closed.
