FOND DU LAC, Wis. -Marian University men's basketball (5-9, 4-5 NACC) was able to survive a late comeback attempt from Edgewood College to record their fifth straight victory by a final score of 72-68.
The Eagles came to play early in the first half jumping out on the Sabres with an 11-4 spurt. Following a Marian timeout, the Sabres would chip away at the Eagle lead and take their first lead of the game at 27-26 with 3:20 left in the first half. The following few minutes saw both the Eagles and Sabres trade basket for basket eventually leading to a 31-31 halftime score. The Eagles controlled the paint in the opening half outrebounding the Sabres 22-13. Marian and Edgewood would pickup where they left off to open the second half leading to a knotted game at 36-36. The Sabre defense then entered a full court press, which allowed the offense to push the tempo and use a 17-4 run to take a 53-40 advantage with 11:55 left to play. Edgewood, however, would not go away quietly as they connected on back-to-back three-pointers to narrow the Sabre lead to nine with under seven minutes left to play forcing a Sabre timeout. Edgewood continued to chip away at the Sabre lead coming to within two at 68-66 with 2:29 left to play. After an Eagle jump shot, the Marian lead would be cut to one with 1:57 in regulation, but the Sabre defense would shutout the Eagles the rest of the way and junior Reggie Roemer would go 3-4 from the charity stripe in the final minute to seal the 72-68 victory. Junior Alex Manhardt led the offense recording his third double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Freshman Will Polcynski and sophomore Tyrese Pinson each chipped in 13 points as well with Polcynski grabbing seven boards and Pinson recording five steals and three assists.
