FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Seniors Cody Veleke and Sam Koslowski led the Marian University men's basketball team to a win over Dominican University, 71-63, in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener inside Sadoff Gymnasium, this afternoon, Nov. 30.
Veleke poured in 20 points, including 15 in the second half, while making two key blocks down the stretch to preserve the victory for the Sabres. Koslowski chipped in 16, while freshman Montrell Hobbs scored 11 off the bench to lead Marian past Dominican. The Sabres dominated the boards, finishing with a 45-23 edge on the glass and a 17-4 advantage in second chance points. Marian improved to 2-3 overall, 1-0 in the NACC, while Dominican dropped to 0-5 (0-1 NACC). The Sabres fell behind early, going down by as many as eight points with 11:22 remaining in the first half. Hobbs then came on to give the lift Marian needed, scoring seven points in an 11-2 run that pushed the Sabres in front 22-21 with 7:10 left before halftime. Marian would finish the half on an 8-2 run to take a 33-27 lead into the break. The Sabre bench outscored Dominican 16-4 in the first 20 minutes. In the second half, Veleke and Koslowski took over, combining for 25 of Marian's 38 points to stave off a feisty Dominican squad. The Sabres, who struggled from the free throw line entering the game, went 16-for-20 on the night, including 9-for-11 in the second half and were solid down the stretch. Sophomore Brad Koth chipped in eight points, including two big three-pointers for the Sabres. Josh Mayberry tallied a career-high 18 points for Dominican in the loss. He led three scorers in double figures as Logan Harris and Ryan Risley added 17 and 16 points, respectively. Marian won its conference opener for the first time in six seasons and will return to action this Tuesday, Dec. 3, with a meeting against MSOE at home.
