ROCKFORD, Ill. – Behind five student-athletes in double digits, the Marian University men's basketball team fended off Rockford, 106-100, in overtime Saturday afternoon at the Seaver Center.
After 40 minutes of action the two teams found themselves knotted at 90-all and the pace of the game didn't slow down in the five-minute overtime period. With two minutes remaining in extra time, Alex Manhardt dunked the ball to break a 98-98 tie and the Sabres went on a 6-2 run the rest of the way to close out the game. Manhardt and Josh Creed each scored 23 points. Manhardt was 9-of-11 from the free-throw line and grabbed six rebounds. Creed finished 9-of-13 from the floor and recorded three steals and a pair of blocks. It was the dynamic backcourt of Reggie Roemer and Alex Stecker that sparked the Sabres' offensive output. Stecker handed out a career-high 10 assists and Roemer followed suit with nine of his own and the duo accounted for 19 of MU's 28 assists. Stecker also scored 10 points to post his first double-double of the season. Roemer chipped in 19 points and was 9-of-11 at the charity stripe. Mitch Welker came off the bench and scored a career-high 12 points. The Sabres dominated in front of the rim and out-rebounded the Regents 40-37. MU also scored 54 points in the paint. John O' Bryan scored 42 points to lead RU (13-10, 9-9 NACC). MU (12-12, 9-10) is still in consideration for a spot in the NACC tournament. The Sabres are one game out of sixth place and close out the regular season Wednesday at MSOE. Comments are closed.
