WAUKESHA, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Marian University junior guard, Jeff Harris, claimed Northern Athletics Conference Player of the Week honors for his career-high, 32-point effort against Dubuque last Saturday, the league office announced today.
Harris shot a season-best 63.6 percent from the floor, going 14-for-22, including 3-of-7 from three-point range. He added seven rebounds and two steals, but host Dubuque was able to overcome Harris' efforts in picking up the non-conference win, 85-76. The Calumet Park, Ill. native ranks sixth in the league at 16.9 points per game this season on 40.8 percent shooting. Harris leads the team and ranks sixth in the NAC with 18 three-pointers made as well. By: Sports Information Director, Luke Pattarozzi
DUBUQUE, Iowa (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's basketball team shot 56.4 percent from the field and Jeff Harris recorded a game-high 32 points, but it still wasn't enough to overcome a solid University of Dubuque squad that posted an 85-76 non-conference home victory at Stoltz Sports Center Saturday night, Dec. 17. The Sabres led by as many as 13 points, 36-23, but the Spartans stormed back to close out the first half on an 8-1 run. By the 14:22 mark in the second half, the hosts took their first lead since the early stages of the game and never looked back. Four Sabres reached double figures led by Harris' 32 points. Cody Veleke and Sam Koslowski chipped in 11 apiece, while Alex Gomez added 10. Lee Piccinelli led a balanced Spartan attack with 19 points, followed by 18 from Mitch Michaelis and 17 from Chris Frazier. Dubuque improves to 6-1 on the season with the win, while Marian falls to 2-7 overall with the loss. Both teams caught fire in the second half, eclipsing 58 percent from the field combined. Marian was 16-for-26 (61.5 percent), while Dubuque was 16-for-29 (55.2 percent). The Sabres saw their lead evaporate for good by the 12:29 mark when the Spartans tied the score at 50-50 after Lucas Ware layup. Ware then followed up with a three to continue the momentum and Dubuque was off and running in the second half. Marian cut the deficit to two, 65-63, with 6:38 remaining, but the Spartans responded with a 12-6 run, fueled by a solid free throw shooting effort, to close out the game. Dubuque went 20-for-27 at the charity stripe for the game, including 16-for-20 in the second half alone. Marian managed just 6-for-11 from the free throw line in the contest. Marian went 15-of-29 (51.7 percent) from the field in the first half, including 4-of-8 from downtown, while Dubuque shot 40.7 percent from the field on 11-of-27 from the field and 5-for-11 from three-point land. The Sabres led for the final 15:32 of the first stanza, using a 10-0 run midway through to build a 32-20 advantage with 5:49 left. An 8-1 run cut the deficit to 37-31 at the half. Marian will be off until Dec. 30, when it plays host to 13th-ranked UW-Whitewater (8-1) inside Sadoff Gymnasium at 7 p.m. By: Sports Information Director, Luke Pattarozzi
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – It was a see-saw battle of cross-divisional teams and in the end came down to free throws as the visiting MSOE Raiders outlasted the host Marian University men's basketball team, 70-61, in Northern Athletics Conference action inside Sadoff Gymnasium, today, Dec. 10. Leading 55-52 with 8:23 remaining, it looked as if Marian Head Coach Mark Boyle might be in line to capture his 300th career victory in his 2011-12 debut fresh off recovering from heart surgery earlier this year. However, MSOE had other plans as an 18-6 run carried the Raiders to their third straight NAC win amidst 13 ties and 15 lead changes and behind a game-high and career-high 30 points from sophomore John Cording. The free throw disparity was evident as the Raiders knocked down 27 of their 36 attempts, while the Sabres hit just 11-of-17. Cording went 8-for-10 at the line and 9-of-14 from the floor, including a 4-for-5 effort from three-point range in the win. The Sabres were led by Cody Veleke's 22 points and six rebounds on 8-of-10 shooting and 2-of-2 from long range. Both teams held slim leads in each half, but it wasn't until the end when MSOE pulled away for good. MSOE improves to 4-4 overall, 3-1 in NAC play with the win, while Marian falls to 2-6 (0-4 NAC) with the loss. An 8-0 run made the difference for the Raiders, capped off by a pair of made free throws by Oren Bloom with 3:27 remaining to make it 60-55. Veleke hit a layup to cut it to a one possession game, but then Cording answered back with a layup of his own to make it 62-57 with 2:48 remaining. A couple open looks failed to cut the deficit more than four as MSOE took care of business at the line down the stretch seal the win. Jeff Harris notched 14 points on 6-of-15 shooting in 34 minutes. Mark Keller added six points, five rebounds and six assists before fouling out in the final minute. The Sabres led by as many as three points in the first half at 22-19, but the Raiders came back to take a 29-28 advantage into the break. Sam Koslowski poured in nine of his 13 points in the first half and Veleke added eight, MSOE's Cording led all scorers with 15 points in the opening frame. Marian will take a break from conference action until Jan. 7, instead playing four non-conference contests between now and then, starting with a road tilt at Dubuque on Dec. 17. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. By: Sports Information Director, Luke Pattarozzi

CUW turned 17 offensive rebounds into 23 second chance points and shot 49.3 percent (33-for-67) from the field. Sophomore forward Cody Veleke led the way for Marian with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, adding six rebounds as well. Mike Keller chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds, while Jeff Harris added 11. CUW wasted no time building its lead out the break, using a 24-10 run over the first eight minutes to quickly go on top, 63-36. ROCKFORD, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – Sophomore Cody Veleke scores a career-high 31 points and the Marian University men's basketball team shoots 55.6 percent for the game, but it's not enough as host Rockford College nets a decisive free throw with 2.6 seconds left to get the, 85-84, win on its home floor, today, Dec. 3. Veleke was nearly perfect from the floor, going 14-for-15 from the field, 2-of-4 from the free throw line and knocking down his only three-point attempt for a game-high 31 points in 33 minutes of action. Junior Jeff Harris scored 19 points and Mike Keller added 12 for Marian. The Regents, who shot 52.4 percent as a team, were led by Tory Minnifield's 27 points on 11-for-19 from the field. He scored scored 20 of those in the second half alone. Rockford improves to 3-3 overall, 1-1 in the NAC, while the Sabres fall to 2-4 (0-2 NAC). Trailing 84-80 with 45 seconds left to play, the Sabres and Interim Head Coach Tony Draves called a timeout to set up the ensuing comeback. Out of the break, it looked to have backfired as the Sabres turned the ball over, but Mike Keller returned the favor as he stole it away from Rockford's Darryl Watkins and laid it in to pull MU to within a bucket. After a foul and missed Regent free throw, the Sabres got the ball back and Veleke tied it up with 15 seconds remaining. With the clock down to six seconds, Rockford's Danny Fair missed a jumper that caromed right to Minnifield, who was then fouled on a shot attempt by Keller with just 2.6 seconds remaining. Minnifield missed the first free throw before burying the second. Marian got nothing more than a desperation heave that went for naught. The Sabres did nearly everything they could offensively, shooting 60 percent in the second half, but Rockford went 50 percent from the field in their own right. MU trailed 47-42 at halftime, getting 16 points from Veleke and nine from Harris. Both teams shot over 51.5 percent from the floor. The Sabres recorded 22 assists on 35 baskets in the loss. Seven players recorded multiple assists, including Charles Ruffing, who tallied a team-high five off the bench. The Sabres will host Concordia Wisconsin on Wednesday, Dec. 7, next time out. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. inside Sadoff Gymnasium. By: Sports Information Director, Luke Pattarozzi
MADISON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's basketball team opened up the Northern Athletics Conference slate with an 81-72 road defeat to host Edgewood College as the Eagles led from start-to-finish at the Edgedome this evening, Nov. 30. The Eagles were led with a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds from pre-season All-American selection, Kent Faurote. The senior went 9-of-14 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the win. The Sabres were led by Sam Koslowski, Jeff Harris and Cody Veleke, who tallied 17 points apiece. Freshman Mike Keller also added 12 points to give the Sabres four in double figures. The Eagles improve to a perfect 6-0 with the win with a 1-0 mark in conference play. Meanwhile, the Sabres fall to 2-3 (0-1 NAC). Edgewood shot 53.8 percent from the field in each half, going 14-for-26 in both stanzas, while adding a 19-for-26 effort from the charity stripe en route to the fairly convincing win. The Eagles led by as many as 17 points in the first half before taking a 12-point, 39-27, advantage into the break. A Charles Ruffing layup at the 8:20 mark cut the Sabres' deficit to 58-53, but the Eagles would respond with eight straight points capped by a Justin Williams jumper to push the lead back to 13. With just two minutes left in the game, the Edgewood lead was trimmed to single digits once again, 77-69, after Harris drained a three-pointer. But a Jake Guziewski three proved as a timely answer that the Eagles were just too much to overcome on this night. After posting an 11-for-31 (35.5 percent) effort from the field in the first half, the Sabres responded by going 17-for-32 (53.1 percent) in the second half. The Sabres' bench outscored Edgewood, 23-15, led by Koslowski's 17 on 7-of-10 shooting. Marian will return to action this Saturday, December 3, as it travels to Rockford to take on the Regents in a 4:15 p.m. start. |
