NEW ULM, Minn. (SabreAthletics.com) -- The Marian University men's basketball team put four players in double figures and outscored host Martin Luther College 14-2 with the help of a 10-point run to close out the second overtime and win the non-conference affair, 90-78, this evening, Dec. 18. Marian played from behind for the majority of the game, trailing the entire first half before outlasting the Knights in the second overtime for the victory. The Sabres were led by Sam Koslowski, who scored a career-high 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Drew Binversie added 20 points, including 12 in both overtimes combined, while Cody Veleke chipped in 15 along with 12 off the bench by Jake Coenen. Marian improved to 4-6 with the win, while Martin Luther fell to 1-9 with the loss. After the more than five-hour long trip from Fond du Lac, the Sabres must have dealt with a case of "bus legs" as the Knights jumped out to a 9-0 advantage before taking their largest lead of the game at 15-2 just five minutes in. However, Marian stayed calm and resilient and slowly chipped away, making it a mere five-point deficit at halftime, 31-26, after Koslowski knocked down a three as the halftime buzzer sounded. The Sabres maintained the momentum in the second half, using another Koslowski three to final take the lead 41-40 at the 13:50 mark in the second half. The junior guard was 2-for-5 from long distance for the game. A Coenen jumper gave the Sabres their largest lead in regulation of 10 points at 56-46 with 8:22 left, but the Knights staged a comeback. They would tie the score at 62-all on a Galen Holzhueter layup with just 3:04 remaining. Trailing 68-66 with under a minute to go, Binversie came to the rescue, tying the game with 38 seconds left and scoring just his eighth point of the game at the time. He would go on to score 12 points in both overtimes combined, tallying six in each extra period. Binversie accounted for all but one point in the Sabres' 7-0 run to close out the first OT and force a second overtime session. He then added six of the team's final eight points in a 14-2 run in the second OT. It concluded a furious run to the finish that saw Marian account for 21 of the game's final 23 points en route to the win. Martin Luther put five players in double figures, led by Holzhueter's 17 points. The Sabres outscored the Knights by 12 points in the paint and turned 24 MLC miscues into 25 points in the win. Marian will have the next 11 days off before taking part in the St. Norbert Holiday Classic, taking on the Green Knights to open the tournament, Dec. 29. Comments are closed.
