RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Marian University men's basketball (10-11, 9-7 NACC) outscored Dominican 42-29 in the second half en route to a 69-56 conference win.
The Sabres had four of their five scorers hit double-figures and had one of their best games at the charity stripe going 22-27 (.815). Senior Alex Manhardt had a game-high 17 points as he continues to close in on 1,000 career points, while junior Evan Hansen scored 16 points, freshman Tristan Van Ess 13 points and junior Tyrese Pinson 12 points. Manhardt also grabbed 14 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season. The first half was a back-and-forth affair with the largest lead being a seven-point Star advantage midway through the half. It wasn't until the 15:16 mark of the second half when Van Ess made a jump shot that jump-started an 11-4 run that allowed Marian to build a 45-36 advantage with 13:03 left to play. Junior Will Olewinski would score the final five points of the run with a layup and three-pointer, respectively. The Stars waded the momentum, however, and only found themselves down 58-52 with 4:23 left to play before the Sabres used an 11-4 run to close out the game and deny any thought of a rally. The Sabre defense once again had a strong outing forcing 18 turnovers, which translated into 21 points off turnovers. Marian also outrebounded the Stars 38-36 and outscored Dominican 12-0 in second chance points. This was all part of a dominant performance down low for Marian that saw the Sabres outscore the Stars 32-12 in the paint. Marian closes out a three-game road trip at Wisconsin Lutheran Tuesday, Feb. 6 with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m. Comments are closed.
