FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (2-9, 1-5 NACC) pulled out a comeback win against Dominican University by a final score of 61-56.
It was a back-and-forth affair early in the first half as Dominican held the early 7-4 lead. The Stars would control most of the first half taking a 24-17 lead which resulted in a Marian timeout. The Sabres fought back into the game, however, cutting the deficit down to 28-24 with 52 seconds left. A late basket at the end of the half allowed Dominican to take a 30-24 lead into halftime. Coming out of halftime Marian would tie the game at 36 off a jump shot from junior Alex Manhardt. Both sides would trade baskets for the next four minutes leading to a Marian timeout. Out of the timeout, the Stars would capitalize and expand their lead to seven with eight minutes left in regulation. Marian would then gain momentum and cut the Star lead to one off a Sabre free throw. Freshman Trentin Fouse then tied the game at 53 with a three-point shot with 3:50 left in the game. Two free throws from Ryan Biffert later allowed the Sabres to claim the lead at 57-56 with just 1:08 remaining. The Sabre defense then stood tall the remainder of the game not allowing a single Dominican point leading to the 61-56 final. The Marian defense would hold the Stars to 21-54 (.389) shooting while forcing 13 turnovers. Leading the way for the Sabres was sophomore Ryan Biffert who had an impressive game on both sides of the ball finishing with 15 points and six rebounds. Freshman Will Polczynski added 11 points and eight rebounds of his own, while sophomore Kelvin Jones came off the bench to give the MU 13 points. Marian will be back in action Wednesday, Jan. 4 when the Sabres host Lakeland for a 7 p.m. tip. FOND DU LAC, Wis. - It was an impressive effort on both sides of the ball as Marian men's basketball (1-9, 0-5 NACC) defeated Finlandia University by a final score of 77-63 for their first win of the season.
The Sabres would come out of the gate fast causing Lion turnovers which Marian would capitalize on the offensive side of the ball. Marian would score nine unanswered points which led to a Finlandia timeout. Marian would not surrender the lead for the rest of the half as they entered intermission 43-29. In the second half, Marian picked up where they left off as they would continue to force Lion turnovers converting into Sabre points. However, Finlandia would not give up as they slowly chipped away at the Sabre lead. At the 6:22 mark of the half, a Finlandia three-pointer would cut the game to under 10 marking the first time since early in the first half the Sabre lead was single digits. The Lions would cut the lead to as little as six with under 3 minutes left to play off back-to-back layups. A Marian timeout proved to be a big factor as the MU defense held Finlandia scoreless the remainder of the game following the timeout. The Sabre defense would collect 16 steals forcing a total of 22 Lion turnovers resulting in 36 points off turnovers. Marian would also shoot 28-58 (.483) from the field. Sophomore Evan Hansen led the way for Marian finishing the game shooting 11-13 (.846) for a career-high 25 points. Sophomore Tyrese Pinson recorded his first double-double of the season finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Marian concludes 2016 at home on December 31 as they welcome NACC foe Dominican University to Sadoff gymnasium for a 3:15 p.m. tip. ROCKFORD, Ill. - Five players would score double figures in a double overtime thriller with Rockford but Marian men's basketball (0-9, 0-5 NACC) would fall on a Regent buzzer beater 98-96.
The Regents would take the lead early in the first half starting the game hot from the field but Marian would bounce back using a timeout to tie the game at 5:32 left in the half. The rest of the half was back-and-forth action and Marian would hold a slight lead heading into halftime 38-36. Marian and Rockford would continue where the first half left off as both teams would trade baskets early in the second half. The tight action saw four ties and neither side holding a lead greater than six. Throughout the final three minutes of play, Rockford held a slim five-point lead, but junior Alex Manhardt would cut the lead down to two with under 50 seconds left in regulation. The Sabres were able to get the defensive stop they needed and were able to capitalize on the offensive front with a pair of free throws from freshman Charlie Witek to force overtime. In overtime, the Regents and Sabres would continue to trade baskets again. Rockford would hold the lead 84-82 with 11 seconds left, but Marian would again be at the line with an opportunity to tie the game. This time it would be sophomore Evan Hansen who sunk a pair of clutch free throws to force a second overtime. The second overtime followed the script from the entire game with tight action and neither team leading by more than four points. A Manhardt layup and free throw gave Marian a one-point lead but a three-pointer from Rockford in the final second of action allowed the Regents to sneak out the 98-96 win. Manhardt led the way with his first double-double of the year finishing with 22 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Sophomore Kelvin Jones gave a spark off the bench for the Sabre offense finishing with 19 points, while Hansen chipped in 17 points. Witek would nearly collect a double-double himself with 13 points and eight rebounds. Marian will next be in action Saturday, December 17 as they travel to Benedictine University for a 4:15 p.m. tip. It was all Aurora University early in the first half as they opened the scoring with a 7-0 run to take the early 10-1 lead. Aurora would then go on to extend their lead to 23-8 after a Spartan three-pointer. The Sabres would battle back around the 2:32 mark of the first half, but the Spartans would take the lead into halftime 47-33. Aurora opened the game shooting 17-34 (.500) from the field including 9-17 (.529) from beyond the arc. The Sabre offense was extremely balanced in the opening half with six Sabres scoring five or more points. In the second half, it was a rejuvenated Sabre offense that pulled the Spartan lead within 14 off a three-pointer from sophomore Kelvin Jones. The Sabres continued to chip away and a Marian dunk by sophomore Ryan Biffert along with a three-pointer by sophomore Evan Hansen would cut the Aurora led to 10 with 7:19 to play. Off a Spartan turnover, the Sabres would shrink the lead to single digits with a three-pointer from freshman Armon Osbourne. Back-to-back layups by Hansen would shrink the Spartan lead to two with under three minutes left in regulation and eventually down to one with a pair of free throws from Hansen. This would be as close as Marian would get, however, as the Spartans were able to hold on in the final minute for the 91-84 NACC win. The Sabres were able to outscore the Spartans 51-44 in the second half shooting 20-35 (.571) from the field. The MU offense was led by Hansen who finished the game with a career-high 23 points and three steals. Junior Alex Manhardt chipped in 13 points along with seven rebounds. Freshman Charlie Witek came off the bench to add 12 points to the Sabre effort. Marian next hits the road Saturday, Dec. 10 for a 4:15 p.m. tip against Rockford. Hot shooting propelled the Eagles in the first half as they connected 17-27 (.630) from the field. The Sabres would keep the game close with sophomore Tyrese Pinson collecting the first seven points of the game for Marian. Throughout the first half, the Eagles would connect on eight baskets from beyond the three-point line leading to a 49-27 advantage heading into halftime. In the second half, The Eagles would continue their hot shooting finishing 32-58 (.552) from the field en route to a 95-66 win. Pinson led the way for Marian finishing the game with 16 points and four rebounds. Junior Alex Manhardt chipped in 14 points along with eight rebounds. Marian will be back in action Tuesday, December 6 as MU continues conference play against Aurora with tip set for 7 p.m. |
