FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (6-13, 5-9 NACC) got out to a slow start and could never recover falling to CUW 82-65 at home.
The Falcons jumped out early on the Sabres using a 17-0 run to jump out to a 17-3 lead. The Sabre offense struggled as the Falcon defense was able to turn turnovers into transition points, but the Sabres were able to bounce back and keep pace. During the final minutes of the half Marian was able to chip into the Falcon lead using a 9-2 run along with scoring the final four points of the half to put the score at 42-26 entering the break. Eight different Sabres would record points in the opening half led by freshman Trentin Fouse who netted six points. Despite the late momentum shift, the Falcons would maintain their lead for much of the second half and the Sabres were unable to gain any ground. The Sabres rallied late closing out the game on a 16-2 but the early first half deficit was too much leading to an 82-65 final. Sophomore Tyrese Pinson was able to score double-figures for the Sabres with a team-high 13 points. Marian next hosts Concordia Chicago Saturday, Feb. 4 for alumni day with tip scheduled for 4:15 p.m. FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (6-12, 5-8 NACC) held on late to defeat Wisconsin Lutheran 85-82 in NACC action.
The Sabres would come out of the gates scoring the first five points of the game and five-point lead proved to be the biggest lead of the half as the teams went back-and-forth. The game was knotted at 22 apiece before the Warriors used a 9-5 run to take a 31-27 lead, their largest lead of the half. A quick 9-3 run to end the half by the Sabres, however, gave MU a 36-34 advantage heading into the locker rooms. Marian shot well in the opening half going 15-29 (.517) from the field and dominatd down low outscoring WLC 20-4 in the paint. Wisconsin Lutheran came out of the break scoring the first four points of the half to regain the lead and eventually grew their lead out to 51-45 with 13:34 left to play. The Sabres responded with a 14-7 run to retake the lead at 59-58 capped off by a three-pointer from freshman Trentin Fouse. The Warriors responded scoring the game's next five points and the two teams went back and forth in a seesaw battle that saw neither team lead by more than two points. WLC found themselves up 75-73 with just 1:54 remaining before the Sabres used a quick 5-0 run to take a 78-75 lead with 36-seconds left, a lead they would not relinquish. Marian then finished out the game making four of their final six free throws and a late desperation shot from WLC would come up short to set the final at 85-82. The Sabres finished the game shooting 28-55 (.509) from the field including 5-16 (.313) from beyond the arc. Three Sabres reached double-figures in the win led by sophomore Evan Hansen who netted 16 points with six rebounds. Fellow sophomore Tyrese Pinson added 14 points, while junior Alex Manhardt chipped in 13 points and had a team-high eight rebounds. Marian opens up a stretch of seven games in 15 days to close out the season Tuesday, Jan. 31 when the Sabres welcome CUW to Sadoff Gym for a 7 p.m. tip. AURORA, Ill. - Marian University men's basketball (5-12, 4-8 NACC) started fast but couldn't keep up with the up-tempo style of Aurora falling 91-74.
The Sabres started the game hot opening with nine of the first 11 points of the game. After the Sabres brought their lead to 15-7 Aurora started to chip away at the MU lead. The Spartans would gain their first lead of the game with a 14-4 run and expanded the lead out to 48-30 to close out the first half. The Sabres would attempt to start a comeback using an 11-2 run midway through the half to cut into the Spartan lead. Marian outscored Aurora 44-43 in the half but the first half deficit was too much to overcome as Aurora held on for the 91-74 win. Junior Alex Manhardt paced the offense with a team-high with 19 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Evan Hansen chipped in 17 points and sophomore Tyrese Pinson added 15 points. Marian will return home to face Wisconsin Lutheran Wednesday, Jan. 25 with a 7 p.m. tip. SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (5-11, 4-7 NACC) fell behind late and couldn't complete a late comeback falling to Lakeland 73-66.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with neither team being able to grow a lead larger than five points. A late 7-2 run from the Muskies would give Lakeland the halftime lead at 32-29. Despite trailing by three, the Sabres outshot Lakeland in the opening half going 14-30 (.467) from the field. The back-and-forth battle continued to open the second half but the Sabres were able to open with an 11-4 to take their largest lead of the game at 40-36 with 16:34 remaining. The lead was traded back-and-forth until the two teams found themselves knotted at 55 with 7:26 left in regulation. Lakeland was then able to use a 14-4 run in the following minutes to open up their lead to 69-59 with just 2:15 left to play. Marian would outscore the Muskies 7-4 in the final minutes but late free throws from Lakeland sealed the final at 73-66. Junior Reggie Roemer led the offense coming off the bench to score a game-high 19 points, while fellow junior Alex Manhardt narrowly missed out on a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Marian is next in action Saturday, Jan. 21 at Aurora for a 4:15 p.m. tip. RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Marian University men's basketball (5-10, 4-6 NACC) rallied late in the game but Dominican was able to answer in the final minutes and defeat the Sabres 74-69.
Marian and Dominican started the game trading basket for basket out of the gates with the Stars taking the early 9-7 lead. The Stars' fast break up-tempo style allowed Dominican to use an 11-1 run that extended their lead out to 27-21. A late push from the Sabres, however, cut the Star lead to 36-33 heading into the break. Marian came out of the intermission fast using an 8-3 run to take a 41-39 lead to open the half. The Stars answered, however, breaking a 47-47 tie with a 12-0 run to retake the lead at 59-47 with 8:40 left. From there, the Sabres were able to rally and chip away at the lead eventually taking the lead back off of a jump shot from junior Alex Manhardt that put the score at 64-66 with 1:55 left to play. Dominican would close out the game with a 10-3 run, however, including a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe in the final 16 seconds to ice the 74-69 win. Manhardt finished the game with his fourth double-double of the season scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 boards. Junior Reggie Roemer came off the bench to chip in 19 points for MU. Marian will be on the road to face Lakeland University Wednesday, Jan. 18 with tip set for 7 p.m. FOND DU LAC, Wis. -Marian University men's basketball (5-9, 4-5 NACC) was able to survive a late comeback attempt from Edgewood College to record their fifth straight victory by a final score of 72-68.
The Eagles came to play early in the first half jumping out on the Sabres with an 11-4 spurt. Following a Marian timeout, the Sabres would chip away at the Eagle lead and take their first lead of the game at 27-26 with 3:20 left in the first half. The following few minutes saw both the Eagles and Sabres trade basket for basket eventually leading to a 31-31 halftime score. The Eagles controlled the paint in the opening half outrebounding the Sabres 22-13. Marian and Edgewood would pickup where they left off to open the second half leading to a knotted game at 36-36. The Sabre defense then entered a full court press, which allowed the offense to push the tempo and use a 17-4 run to take a 53-40 advantage with 11:55 left to play. Edgewood, however, would not go away quietly as they connected on back-to-back three-pointers to narrow the Sabre lead to nine with under seven minutes left to play forcing a Sabre timeout. Edgewood continued to chip away at the Sabre lead coming to within two at 68-66 with 2:29 left to play. After an Eagle jump shot, the Marian lead would be cut to one with 1:57 in regulation, but the Sabre defense would shutout the Eagles the rest of the way and junior Reggie Roemer would go 3-4 from the charity stripe in the final minute to seal the 72-68 victory. Junior Alex Manhardt led the offense recording his third double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Freshman Will Polcynski and sophomore Tyrese Pinson each chipped in 13 points as well with Polcynski grabbing seven boards and Pinson recording five steals and three assists. The Sabres open up a three-game road trip traveling to Dominican University Saturday, January 14 for a 4:15 p.m. tip. RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Four Sabres recorded double-figures as Marian University men's basketball (4-9, 3-5 NACC) rallied late to defeat Concordia Chicago 85-73.
In the first half, the Sabres and Cougars would trade baskets early to start the game with the Sabres holding the one-point lead at 12-11 with under 12 minutes left to play. The Sabres would take the first healthy lead of the game using an 8-0 run to take a 20-13 lead. Concordia Chicago battled back, however, to cut the deficit to one at 32-31 with 1:29 left in the half. Marian then closed out the half with a quick 6-0 run that extended the MU lead out to 38-31 heading into the locker room. The Cougars and Sabres went back-and-forth with CUC slowly chipping away at the Sabre lead until the Cougars took their first lead of the half at 51-50 with 10:16 left in regulation. The game continued to be a battle on both sides with the Cougars leading 60-58 with 5:29 left when the Sabres used an extended run to put away CUC. MU would shoot 6-7 from the field in the following minutes as part of a 19-3 run that allowed the Sabres to build a 77-63 lead with just 1:20 remaining. Marian was then able to put the game away from the charity stripe in the final minute setting the final at 85-73. The Marian offense once again put together a good game shooting 30-61 (.492) from the field including 5-16 (.313) from beyond the arc. The Sabre defense would force 18 Cougar turnovers and turned that into 28 points. Sophomores Tyrese Pinson and Kelvin Jones each netted a game-high 19 points to lead the offense with Pinson nearly missing out on a double-double with nine rebounds. Junior Alex Manhardt came off the bench, shooting 7-12 for the game, to chip in 18 points and eight rebounds. Marian hits the road once again traveling to MSOE Tuesday, Jan. 10 for a 7 p.m. tip. FOND DU LAC, Wis.-Marian men's basketball (3-9, 2-5 NACC) defeated conference rival Lakeland University in convincing fashion by a final score of 84-74.
The Sabres pounced on the Muskies early in the first half connecting on their first three attempts from the floor as part of a 9-4 forcing a Lakeland timeout. Marian would not surrender the lead for the remainder of the half as the Sabre defense shut down the Muskie offense and the Sabres would take a 39-33 lead into the break. The Muskies fought back to open the second half, however, as they were able to chip away at the Marian lead. A Muskie layup would cut the lead to one at 46-45 resulting in a Sabre timeout with 16:40 in regulation. Throughout the next five minutes, the Sabre lead would grow no greater than four with the Muskies tying the game at 55 with 11:20 left in regulation. This would be as close as Lakeland could manage, however, as the Sabres made back-to-back three-pointers to extend their lead to six. The Sabres rode that momentum to build their lead out to 74-59 with the final eventually settling at 84-74. Four of the five Sabre starters recorded double-digit points on the day with junior Alex Manhardt leading the way with 23. Manhardt also collected 10 rebounds on the day recording his second double-double on the season. Sophomore Kelvin Jones added 18 points and 6 assists.
