WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Marian University men's basketball frontcourt duo of junior Alex Manhardt and freshman Will Polczynski have been named All-NACC.
Manhardt (West Bend, Wis.) had another big year down low for the Sabres and recorded six double-doubles on the season and was named second-team All-NACC. The junior led the Sabres in scoring for most of the year with 14.5 points per game and ranked fourth in the NACC with 8.4 rebounds per game. Manhardt also showed his prowess for the ball down low ranking fifth in the NACC with 1.48 blocks per game. At the charity stripe, he ranked second for free throw attempts (143) and free throws made (95). In his first season, Polczynski (New Berlin, Wis.) started in 17 games for the Sabres averaging 6.6 points per game and 3.5 rebounds per game, while also shooting 50-percent from the field to earn himself a spot on the All-NACC Freshman team. Polczynski ranked second on the team with nine blocks and also nabbed 15 steals on the season. One of his best performances came at Wisconsin Lutheran with the freshman scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds with three steals. FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (8-17, 7-13 NACC) closed out the 2016-17 season with an overtime win over MSOE 91-89.
In a game that was close throughout with MSOE leading for most of the first half. However, a 6-0 run by the Sabres around the 11-minute mark cut the Raider lead to two at 18-16. The Raiders would respond and expand their lead to seven at 33-26 with under five minutes to play. A Marian jumper to beat the buzzer saw the Sabres cut the Raider lead to two heading into halftime at 38-36. Marian and MSOE started the second half of play trading basket for basket. Marian would find their stride from the offensive side of the ball as they connected on five of their six offensive possessions of the half claiming the lead at 52-46. Out of an MSOE timeout, the Raiders would rally back to cut the Sabre lead to six with under 13 minutes to play. Three three-pointers by sophomore Ryan Biffert then extended the Sabre lead to 65-55. MSOE would crawl their way back into the game cutting the Sabre lead to two off back-to-back layups at 78-76. The Raiders regained the lead in the closing seconds of regulation at 81-79 however, Marian would answer back to knot the game at 81. A Sabre desperation shot went wide forcing overtime. Both the Sabres and Raiders picked up where they left off from regulation with Marian holding a slim two-point lead with under three minutes to play. A Sabre jump shot and two clutch Marian free throws would seal the victory for MU. Three of the five starters for the Sabres finished with double-digit points on the day with junior Alex Manhardt collecting his sixth double-double on the season finishing with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Ryan Biffert had a career night scoring 22 points going 6-8 from beyond the arc, while junior Reggie Roemer chipped in 21 points. FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (7-17, 6-13 NACC) held off a late Regent push defeating Rockford 86-82 at home in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action.
The Regents jumped out to an early 11-10 lead before Marian used a quick 8-2 run to take an 18-13 lead, a lead they would not relinquish in the first half. The Sabres would extend their lead out to as large as 11, but the Regents were able to battle back and cut the deficit down to three at 41-38 heading into halftime. Rockford continued to stick around with Marian eventually tieing the game at 57-57. The Sabre offense then went back to work and went on an 11-2 run to retake the lead at 68-59 with 9:03 left to play. A layup from junior Reggie Roemer extended the lead out to 13 at 76-63 with 7:15 left to play when Rockford began to mount a comeback. Similarly to the first half, the Regents cut into the Sabre lead slowly eventually bringing the game to an 84-82 Marian lead with 1:31 left in the game. Neither offense was able to find a rhythm in the final minute and a pair of free throws from junior Alex Manhardt helped seal the game at 86-82. Manhardt led the way with a team-high 18 points and nine boards, while freshman Will Polczynski finished with 13 points. Freshman Danny Duchaj came off the bench to provide the Sabre offense 11 points. Marian closes out the season hosting MSOE at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14. MADISON, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (6-17, 5-13 NACC) fell to Edgewood College by a final score of 80-61.
The Sabres jumped out early scoring the first eight points of the game off of a pair of three-pointers and a layup. Edgewood bounced back quickly, however, tying the game at 12-12 shortly after. From there the Eagles were able to take their first lead of the game and slowly began to extend on their lead. Marian was able to hold off the Eagles from making an extended run and kept the deficit manageable. The Eagles opened the second half fast coming out of the break with a 10-2 run. MU was able to rebound off the run and keep pace with Edgewood but were unable to chip away at their deficit leading to the 80-61 final. MU held a +9 turnover differential in the loss forcing 14 Eagle turnovers while turning the ball over only five times. Three Sabre starters scored double-figures led by junior Reggie Roemer who netted a game-high 20 points. Junior Alex Manhardt was able to produce his fifth double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 boards. Marian opens the final homestand of the season hosting Rockford Saturday, Feb. 11 for a 4:15 p.m. tip. MILWAUKEE - Marian University men's basketball (6-16, 5-12 NACC) got out to a slow start and could never recover in an 80-57 road loss at MSOE.
MSOE jumped out of the gates fast with a 23-8 run that forced a Sabre timeout with 8:42 remaining in the first half. The Sabres were able to rally following the timeout and keep pace with the Raiders but were unable to cut into the early deficit and headed into the locker rooms trailing 40-23 at half. Junior Reggie Roemer started the scoring for the Sabres in the second half with a three-pointer and a layup, but the Raider offense was able to keep up with their first half pace. Marian would close out the game on an 8-2 run with five points coming from freshman Julian Lynch to build momentum into their next game. Marian had one of their best games of the season beyond the arc shooting 7-20 (.350) from three-point land. Roemer finished the game with a team-high 15 points, while junior Alex Manhardt had five rebounds, two assists and three blocks. Marian plays their final road game of the season when they travel to Edgewood Wednesday, Feb. 8 for a 7 p.m. tip. FOND DU LAC, Wis. - In a game that saw four of the five Sabre starters hit double figures in scoring, Marian University men's basketball (6-15, 5-11 NACC) fell to Concordia Chicago in a close contest 80-77.
The game was close throughout with Marian taking a 13-11 lead early in the first half. The Cougars would tie the game at 15 a piece minutes later. Marian would make an 8-0 run to take a 36-28 lead until Concordia Chicago answered back. Both teams traded baskets to end the half with Marian taking a 43-41 lead into the intermission break. The Sabres used the halftime break to expand their lead to 50-44 early in the half. Concordia Chicago would not go away quietly as they slowly chipped away at the Sabre lead and cut it to 69-65 with under eight minutes to go. CUC then tied the game at 71 apiece with three minutes left in regulation. The following minutes saw the Cougars and Sabres both hold a one-point lead. A pair of clutch Sabre free throws would knot the game at 77 with 32 seconds left. Concordia Chicago would sink a three-pointer and a Sabre three-pointer to tie the game would fall short sealing the victory for the Cougars. Of the four Sabres to reach double figures for the day, junior Alex Manhardt led the Sabres finishing with 19 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Evan Hansen recorded 15 points and six rebounds while junior Reggie Roemer collected his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshmen Will Polczynski rounded out the scoring for the Sabres with 10 points and five rebounds. The Sabres travel to MSOE Monday, Feb. 6 for a 7 p.m. tip and then head to Edgewood, Wednesday, Feb. 7 also for a 7 p.m. tip before the final homestand of the season. LISLE, Ill. - Marian University men's basketball (6-14, 5-10 NACC) closed out the season series with No. 18 Benedictine falling to the Eagles.
The Sabres jumped out to an early lead on Benedictine at 11-7 with four of the MU points coming from sophomore Ryan Biffert and five from fellow sophomore Tyrese Pinson. A Benedictine timeout, however, would shift the momentum of the game and allowed the Eagles to take a sizeable lead. Marian was able to end the half strong with a steal from junior Reggie Roemer sandwiched between a pair of dunks from junior Alex Manhardt. Despite the strong finish to the half, the Sabre defense continued to have a rough time slowing down the potent offense of Benedictine in the second half. Freshman Kelvin Jones finished the game strong for the Sabres scoring the final eight Marian points. Despite the loss, the Sabres outrebounded Benedictine 39-36 for the game and held a 14-11 margin in second chance points. Pinson and Manhardt each had a team-high 12 points, while freshman Danny Duchaj came off the bench to chip in 10 points. Marian returns home to host Concordia Chicago for alumni day Saturday, Feb. 4 with tip scheduled for 4:15 p.m. from Sadoff. |
