FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Defense and balanced scoring was again the recipe for the Marian University men's basketball team as it knocked off Northern Athletics Conference foe, Maranatha Baptist Bible College, 71-56, at home for its fifth straight win inside Sadoff Gymnasium, this evening, Jan. 29. The stifling Sabre defense held the Crusaders to just 36.4 percent from the field, including 3-of-18 from downtown en route to the victory. Marian featured nine players with five or more points, led by Sam Koslowski and Cody Veleke who recorded 12 points apiece. Maranatha's Joel Borchardt led all scorers with 14 points on 5-of-14 from the field. Marian improved to 13-8 overall, 8-4 in the NAC and swept the season series from the Crusaders with the win. Maranatha fell to 5-14 (1-11 NAC) with the loss. The Sabres led by as many as 13 points in the first half after holding Maranatha to just 32.1 percent (9-for-28) from the field, but only led by six points. The Crusaders made a furious 7-0 run to close out the half trailing 32-26. A Kyle Kutz jumper to open the second half made it a four-point game, but that would be as close as the Crusaders would get. Jake Coenen came off the bench and knocked down two of his three triples to build the Sabre lead back to double digits, 51-39. Leading comfortably with less than three minutes remaining, Alex Gomez then turned in a nifty reverse layup to give the Sabres their largest lead of the game, 71-51. Marian out-rebounded Maranatha, 40-34. Drew Binversie led the Sabres with nine boards (three offensive) to go with six points. Marian will close out the 2012-13 regular season home schedule this Saturday, Feb. 2, when it plays host to Concordia University Chicago at 4:15 p.m. The lone Sabre senior, Coenen, will be honored prior to the start of the game. FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – All 12 Sabres that saw action recorded at least one basket as the Marian University men's basketball team won handily in a 77-53 blowout of Northland International University to close out non-conference play inside Sadoff Gymnasium, this afternoon, Jan. 26. Marian used a balanced scoring attack and big runs in each half to put away the visiting Pioneers on Parents' Day this afternoon. Freshman Brad Koth led the Sabres in scoring with 12 points, while eight other players recorded five or more points. Micah Baines led three Pioneers in double figures with 17 points. Marian won for the eighth time in its last 10 games and improved to 12-8 overall, while NIU dropped to 12-7 with the loss. Leading 23-15 with nearly 7:30 left in the first half, the Sabre embarked on a 13-0 run to make it a 21-point lead in less than four minutes. Richard Knar capped the run with his second three of the game. Marian would take a 39-22 advantage into the break after shooting 53.6 percent (15-for-28) from the floor, including 7-for-11 from long distance. Knar and Alex Gomez tallied eight points to lead all Marian scorers. The second half was much of the same. Leading comfortably, 51-36, Marian then went on an impressive 19-0 run, holding NIU without a single point for more than six-and-a-half minutes, to make the score an insurmountable margin of 70-36. The Sabres made 11 three-pointers in the contest, marking their season-high and eclipsing their previous high of 10, which they achieved against MSOE last Wednesday, Jan. 23. Jake Coenen knocked down three triples to lead all outside shooters and finished with nine points. Marian's bench outscored NIU by a whopping, 45-6, while converting 20 Pioneer turnovers into 26 points as well. The Sabres held the Pioneers to their third-lowest output of the season in the winning effort. Marian will jump back into Northern Athletics Conference play this Tuesday, Jan. 29, when Maranatha Baptist (5-13, 1-10 NAC) invades Sadoff Gymnasium. The Sabres defeated the Crusaders, 83-77, in Watertown back on Jan. 17. Tuesday's tip-off is set for 7 p.m. By: Sports Information Director, Luke Pattarozzi
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Stifling defense was the key to victory for the Marian University men's basketball team as it defeated visiting MSOE, 59-47, in a Northern Athletics Conference showdown inside Sadoff Gymnasium, this evening, Jan. 23. "MSOE is a good defensive team and we were able to take advantage of some open shots throughout the game," Head Coach Mark Boyle said. "Our defense was tough. We didn't allow them to do what they wanted offensively." The Sabres won for the third straight time and the eighth time in their last 10 outings by holding MSOE to just 33.3 percent (14-for-42) from the floor, including 2-for-14 from the three-point arc. Meanwhile, the Sabres converted a season-high 10 three-pointers, eight of those coming in the first half. Junior Cody Veleke (Oakfield, Wis.) led three in double figures with 12 points and six rebounds. Freshman Drew Binversie (Valders, Wis.) finished with 11 points and six rebounds, while sophomore Alex Gomez (Belvidere, Ill.) added 10 points off the bench. Marian improved to 11-8 overall and swept the regular season series from the Raiders, while matching last season's NAC win total by moving to 7-4 in the conference. Meanwhile, MSOE saw its four-game winning streak snapped as it fell to 13-6 (7-3 NAC). Much like their last meeting back on Dec. 5, it was a back-and-forth battle, at least at the start. Trailing 17-15 with 7:29 remaining in the first half, Veleke knocked down a three-pointer from the wing to give the Sabres an 18-15 lead, one they would not relinquish. Marian closed the first half on a 19-6 run to lead 34-23 at the break. Gomez hit two three-pointers in 11 minutes off the bench, while freshman Brad Koth (Butte des Morts, Wis.) hit a triple at the buzzer, his only three points of the game. "Alex and Brad gave us a huge boost right before halftime," Boyle said. "Our bench really stepped up tonight. Alex gave us a huge spark offensively, but was really solid on the defensive end as well." In the second half, the Sabres kept the pressure on by forcing eight turnovers and holding the Raiders to just 28.6 percent (6-for-21) from the field. MSOE's Connor Patterson scored two of his team-high 14 points to cut the deficit to seven points, 39-32, at the 14:36 mark, but that was as close as the Raiders would get the rest of the way. A Gomez layup with just under five minutes remaining in regulation gave the Sabres their largest lead of the game of 15 points, 55-40. The Sabres are now just two games back of first place Lakeland (16-4, 9-2 NAC) after the Muskies fell to Concordia Wisconsin (11-7, 8-3 NAC), which sits one game ahead of the Sabres in second place in the North Division. Marian will close out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a home game against Northland International this Saturday, Jan. 26. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. By: Sports Information Director, Luke Pattarozzi
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – A strong second half keyed a victory for the Marian University men's basketball team as it knocked off the last remaining unbeaten in the Northern Athletics Conference, Aurora University, 76-70, inside Sadoff Gymnasium, this evening, Jan. 19. "I thought it was a very hard-fought game, challenging for both teams physically," Marian Head Coach Mark Boyle said. "It was a battle in the trenches and we were fortunate enough to come out on top." Sam Koslowski led three Sabres in double figures as Marian outlasted the last remaining NAC unbeaten in a game that saw 11 ties and 16 lead changes. Cody Veleke added 18 points and fell one rebound shy of a double-double, while Drew Binversie chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. Marian improved to 10-8 overall, 6-4 in the NAC with the win, while Aurora fell to 13-5 (8-1 NAC) with the loss. The Sabres endured 14 first-half turnovers that translated into 18 points for the visitors, yet found themselves tied at 38-apiece after shooting 54.8 percent (17-for-31) from the field. "We knew we came out of the first half very fortunate after withstanding 14 turnovers," Boyle said. "We knew we had to take care of the ball better." And they did. Marian turned the ball over just six times in the second half. The Spartans went 3-for-18 (16.7 percent) from beyond the arc and the Sabres dominated the rebounding battle, 41-32. "Sam (Koslowski) really stepped his game up defensively and Cody's (Veleke) completeness as a player was big for us," Boyle said. Another guy that stepped up in a big way was freshman Alex Stecker, who knocked down a three-pointer to give Marian a 65-64 lead with 5:06 remaining. After losing the lead the possession before, Stecker's shot gave the Sabres a lift and the lead in which they would not relinquish the rest of the way. Binversie's double-double and five points off the bench from Brad Koth also proved clutch by two more freshmen down the stretch. "Our freshmen do not play like freshmen," Boyle said. "They have been consistent contributors this season and have come up big so many times for use this year." The win over Aurora marks the second time this season Marian has handed a NAC South unbeaten its first conference loss of the year. Earlier this season, the Sabres gave 3-0 Rockford its first league defeat of the year. "This win gives us real confidence to build on after playing a quality opponent in a very difficult week," Boyle said after his team went 2-1, including a win at Maranatha and a narrow loss on the road to Concordia Wisconsin. Next up for the Sabres will be another tough opponent in MSOE, which has won four straight and sits at 7-2 in the conference. One of those losses was to Marian back on Dec. 5, in Milwaukee. Both teams will square off once more in the regular season this Wednesday, Jan. 23. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside Sadoff Gymnasium. By: Sports Information Director, Luke Pattarozzi
WATERTOWN, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's basketball team staved off a pesky Maranatha Baptist Bible College squad that is still searching for its first Northern Athletics Conference victory as the Sabres registered the 83-77 road victory, this evening, Jan. 17. Sam Koslowski recorded a career-high 30 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc and 8-of-11 from the free throw line to lead all scorers. Marian made up a two-point halftime deficit and held off the Crusaders to win its fourth league game in the last five tries. The Sabres improved to 9-8 overall, 5-4 in the NAC with the win, while Maranatha fell to 2-12 (0-9 NAC) with the loss. Trailing 10-9 early on, the Sabres used a 12-2 run to take a 21-12 advantage over the Crusaders, their largest lead of the game. But Maranatha would not go away without a fight. The Crusaders shot 61.5 percent (16-for-26) in the first half, including an astounding 8-for-12 from the three-point line. With time winding down in the opening period, Matthew Hunter knocked down a jumper to equal the Crusaders' largest lead of the game and give his team a 43-41 advantage at halftime. Hunter would finish with 16 points, going perfect from the field with a 6-for-6 effort, including 4-of-4 from downtown. The start of the second half was a tight, back-and-forth battle as neither team gained more than a three-point lead until the 8:00 mark when Brad Koth drained a three to give Marian a 56-51 lead. Solvik then added another three to further increase the lead. However, Maranatha would have another run in them. Matthew McGivern and Joel Borchardt combined for a 6-0 run to cut the Sabre lead to two points, 59-57. That would be as close as the Crusaders got the rest of the way as Koslowski and company staved off their counterpart by going 22-for-34 at the free with several of those coming down the stretch. Cody Veleke finished with 14 points and nine rebounds as he continues his strong play. Alex Stecker added 11 points, while Koth chipped in 10 off the bench. Meanwhile, Brett Cashner led the Crusaders with a 21-point effort, while Borchardt and McGivern added 17 and 12, respectively. Borchardt added a game-high 10 rebounds for a double-double. Marian will take some momentum into its showdown with the lone unbeaten in the NAC, Aurora University, who defeated Benedictine University tonight to move to 13-4 (8-0 NAC). MEQUON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's basketball team erased a 16-point deficit, but was unable to hold on to its lead as rival Concordia University Wisconsin escaped with a 67-60 victory inside Buuck Fieldhouse, this evening, Jan. 15. The Sabres used a 21-7 run to open the second half, eliminating a once 16-point deficit and 12-point CUW halftime lead. Much like Marian's first meeting with CUW, it failed to hold a lead late in the game. The Sabres held a 58-55 lead with 5:43 remaining, but the Falcons closed the game on a 12-2 run for the seven-point victory. Cody Veleke led four Sabres in double figures with 14 points. Sam Koslowski and Alex Stecker had 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Brad Koth chipped in 10 off the bench. CUW's Mark Pace led all scorers with 21 points. Brian Jackson had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the game's lone double-double, while Steve Zielinski fell just shy of his own version, finishing with nine blocks and eight rebounds. Concordia Wisconsin improved to 9-6 overall, 6-2 in the NAC with the win. Meanwhile, Marian saw its four-game winning streak snapped as it fell to 8-8 (4-4 NAC) with the loss. The Falcons came out firing on all cylinders, shooting 57.1 percent in the first half to take a 12-point lead into the locker room. They held the Sabres to 40 percent shooting. Pace led all scorers at the break with 11 points. Veleke had eight points for Marian. In the second half, it was all Sabres from the get-go. Marian scored the half's first seven points, leading to an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to 42-39 at the 15:38 mark and forcing a CUW timeout. Pace converted a pair of free throws out of the timeout to halt the run, but it was Koth to the rescue for the second straight game. Against Wisconsin Lutheran last Saturday, Koth hit a pair of late three's to give Marian its first lead of the game before eventually winning in double overtime. Tonight, he hit two more, separated by an Elan Solvik jumper, that gave the Sabres a 49-47 lead with 11:34 remaining. From then, it was a back-and-forth battle between both teams. A trend they have grown accustomed to of late. Earlier this season, the Falcons stole a one point win inside Sadoff Gymnasium. That was followed by their final meeting a season ago at Buuck Fieldhouse in which the Sabres squandered a late lead to Luke Doedens' buzzer beating shot to send the game to overtime, which also led to a Falcon victory. The game would have a similar feel without the late-game heroics as Pace and the Falcons converted free throws down the stretch and denied the Sabres an opportunity to seize the moment. Despite the loss, Marian has won five of its last seven games and sits in contention in the NAC North Division behind Lakeland, Concordia Wisconsin and MSOE, two of which they will face again this season. Next up for the Sabres will be Maranatha Baptist, which is still searching for its first NAC win of the season. Both teams will meet Thursday, Jan. 17, in Watertown. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. By: Sports Information Director, Luke Pattarozzi
MILWAUKEE (SabreAthletics.com) – Junior Cody Veleke and freshman Drew Binversie combined for 41 points and the Marian University men's basketball team came away with a, 75-71, come-from-behind, overtime victory on the road over Northern Athletics Conference foe, Wisconsin Lutheran College, this afternoon, Jan. 12. Binversie and Veleke led the team with 23 and 18 points, respectively, with 36 points combined coming in the second half and overtime. The Sabres overcame as much as a nine-point deficit to come away with the victory despite giving up 25 points on 22 turnovers. WLC's Tim Demuth led all scorers with 33 points on 12-of-22 from the field, including 5-of-13 from beyond the arc in the losing effort. Marian won for the fourth straight time and fifth time in its last six tries as it improved to 8-7 overall, 4-3 in the NAC. Meanwhile, Wisconsin Lutheran dropped to 7-10 (4-4 NAC) after just its second loss in the seven games. The Sabres fought back from a nine-point deficit to trail by just four, 26-22, at halftime despite shooting 28.6 percent (6-for-21) in the first half alone. No Sabre had more than Sam Koslowski's four points, while Demuth led the Warriors with nine. In the second half, Marian tied the game at 35-all on a pair of Mike Keller free throws with 14:50 left in regulation and then took its first lead on a Brad Koth three-pointer at the 12:30 mark. Koth would tally two more from long distance to finish with nine points in nine quality minutes off the bench. Marian led by as many as four points before Demuth and the Warriors battled back. There were nine ties and five lead changes down the stretch. Veleke gave the Sabres a two-point lead with 13 seconds remaining before Nate Bauer tied it up at 64-64 with five seconds. A final chance for Marian came on a missed three-pointer by Alex Stecker at the horn. In overtime, a minute went by before buckets by Binversie and Veleke gave the Sabres a four-point lead. A Demuth three-pointer would give WLC a 69-68 lead with 2:18 left, but Binversie came back the other way and converted an old-fashioned three-point play to put Marian on top and they wouldn't look back from there. The Sabres went just 16-for-24 at the charity stripe, but came through when it mattered most, knocking down its last seven attempts at the end of the second half and overtime. The Sabres win their second overtime game of the season on the road after a 90-78 double-overtime victory over Martin Luther earlier this season. Marian will look to make it five straight wins when they travel to Concordia University Wisconsin Tuesday, Jan. 15. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. By: Sports Information Director, Luke Pattarozzi
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Hot-shooting prevailed on this night as both teams shot over 55 percent from the field, but solid defense down the stretch proved the difference as the Marian University men's basketball team outlasted visiting Northern Athletics Conference foe, Edgewood College, 67-66, inside Sadoff Gymnasium this evening, Jan. 9. The Sabres led by as many as 14 points in the second half, but a huge run allowed the Eagles to climb back to take a one point lead with 3:15 remaining. The score changed hands three more times with the final time coming on a Cody Veleke offensive rebound putback off a free throw miss to give Marian the lead. Edgewood had a chance in the waning moments, but to no avail. Veleke led all scorers with 19 points on 8-for-11 from the field, while Alex Stecker added 16 points and Sam Koslowski 14. Veleke also hauled in 10 rebounds to record the double-double. Marian improved to 7-7 overall, 3-3 in the NAC with its third straight victory and fourth in its last five games. Meanwhile, Edgewood fell to 3-12 (2-4 NAC) with the loss. Both squads came out firing on all cylinders offensively, combining to hit nine of the game's first 10 shots. The Sabres finished the first half with a 38-30 lead on 60 percent (15-for-25) shooting. Despite trailing, the Eagles went 12-for-21 (57.1 percent) from the floor. At the 12:04 mark in the second half, Marian's Brad Koth hit a three-pointer that gave the Sabres a 55-41 lead, their largest of the game and it seemed as if the game was in hand. However, the Eagles had an answer as they embarked on a 21-7 run that tied the game with 3:53 remaining. A Joe Klocek layup gave Edgewood its first lead since the first half at 64-63 near the 3:00 mark, but then Veleke took over for the Sabres. The junior forward had four points and five rebounds over the final few minutes, none bigger than the offensive rebound put back with 42 seconds left that gave the Sabres a 67-66 lead. Binversie, one of Marian's best free throw shooters missed both free throws for a chance to tie and possibly give Marian the lead, but Veleke was there to clean up the miss and his reverse layup put his team back in front. The Sabres subsequently used a 30-second timeout to set up their defense. On the next Edgewood possession, Veleke hauled in a big defensive rebound on a Brett Meinecke missed layup. Veleke then looked ahead and his outlet pass led to the Sabres nearly running the remaining 13 seconds off the clock. After a foul and another missed free throw by Marian, Edgewood had a final chance in the last 1.9 seconds, but failed to get a shot off. The Sabres will look to make it four straight wins when they head to Milwaukee to take on Wisconsin Lutheran College this Saturday, Jan. 12. Tip-off is set for 4:15. FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Behind a balanced scoring attack the Marian University men's basketball team handed visiting Rockford College its first loss in Northern Athletics Conference play as the Sabres led wire-to-wire in a 65-60 win inside Sadoff Gymnasium this afternoon, Jan. 5. The Sabres put two players in double figures, led by Alex Stecker and Sam Koslowski, who recorded 11 points apiece. Marian held a 33-27 rebounding advantage and turned 12 offensive caroms into 10 second-chance points en route to the win. Rockford was led by Scott Suchy's game-high 16 points, leading four Regents in double figures, but it wasn't enough. Marian improved to 6-7 overall, 2-3 in the NAC with the win, while Rockford dropped to 5-8 (3-1 NAC) with the loss. The win marked the first for the Sabres in the last seven tries against the Regents. Marian jumped out to a 5-0 lead out of the gate, thanks in part to a Koslowski three-pointer followed by a pair of Cody Veleke free throws. After Rockford cut the deficit to one, senior Jake Coenen came off the bench and provided a spark that would set a trend for the entire game. Coenen knocked down a pair of three's in a 12-3 run that gave the Sabres a 19-9 advantage midway through the first half. He would finish with nine points on 3-for-6 shooting, while adding three rebounds and two steals. Marian shot 43.3 percent (13-for-30) from the field, including 6-for-14 from long distance, while holding Rockford to just 33.3 percent (9-for-27) and 0-for-6 from the outside en route to a 34-26 halftime lead. In the second half, Marian pushed the lead to 10 on several occasions, but the Regents never led the game get out of reach. Rockford's David Dixon played a major role down the stretch, connecting on back-to-back buckets to cut the Marian lead to three at 60-57 with 2:17 remaining. However, Veleke converted with a 10-foot jumper followed by three Drew Binversie free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
