MILWAUKEE - Marian University men's basketball (0-6, 0-2 NACC) fell to Wisconsin Lutheran by a 66-65 final in another close road contest.
Freshman Will Polczynski would score 8 of the Sabres first 12 points as Marian took an early 12-8 lead. Down 21-16, the Sabres would go on a 17-0 run that gave Marian a 33-25 lead going into halftime. The Marian defense was especially strong in the opening half holding Wisconsin Lutheran to 9-31 (.290) shooting and forcing 13 Warrior turnovers. Polczynski led the way with a game-high 13 points in the first half. In the second half, the Warriors would chip away at the Sabre lead cutting the MU advantage to three forcing a Marian timeout midway through the second half. Out of the timeout, the Sabre defense would come alive once again propelling the Sabres to an 8-2 run that gave MU a seven point lead with under 12 minutes left in regulation. Both teams would trade baskets for the next couple of minutes with the lead growing no bigger than four after the Warriors tied the game at 46. The tight game went down to the wire as the pair of teams found themselves knotted at 65-65. The Warriors would sink one of two free throws with under 10 seconds left and a last-second Sabre shot would be off the mark leading to the 66-65 final. MU outscored WLC 36-28 in the paint and 23-13 in points off turnovers, but the Warriors would outrebound Marian 45-38. Polczynski led the way for the Sabres with a team-high 19 points and grabbed four rebounds. Junior Alex Manhardt and sophomore Tyrese Pinson each narrowly missed out on double-doubles as Manhardt would score 13 points with nine rebounds and Pinson added 12 points and nine rebounds. Marian returns home to host Benedictine Saturday, December 3 for the first NACC doubleheader of the season at Sadoff Gym. The Blugolds jumped out on the Sabres early in the first half taking a 14-9 lead following a Marian turnover. Marian chipped away at the Eau Claire lead as they cut the Blugold lead to 2 with 11 minutes left to play in the first half. The Blugolds would go on an 8-0 run, however, with 9 minutes left to play and took a 44-27 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Blugold offense continued to roll as they extended the lead to as large as 27 midway through the half. Cold shooting and costly turnovers would be the downfall for the Sabres as they fell by a final score of 79-49. Sophomore Tyrese Pinson led the offense with a team-high six points. Marian is next in action Wednesday, Nov. 30 as the Sabres return to NACC play at Wisconsin Lutheran with a 7 p.m. tip. MEQUON, Wis. - Marian Universtiy men's basketball (0-4, 0-1 NACC) fell in a close contest to open NACC play to Concordia Wisconsin by a final score of 80-78.
The Sabre defense came to play early as they forced four turnovers off of four steals. Marian would use this advantage as they claimed a 12 point lead with just under eight minutes to play in the first half. Tha Falcons were able to narrow the gap, however, cutting the deficit down to five at 28-23 forcing a Sabre timeout. Marian benefited from the break and were able to hold off the charge into halftime with a 36-30 lead. The Sabres would shoot well in the opening half going 15-33 (.455) from the field led by sophomore Evan Hansen who netted 11 points. The Falcons chipped away at the Sabre lead to open the second half putting the score at 42-38 with 16 minutes left in regulation. Marian continued to battle but Concordia Wisconsin would eventually take their first lead since the first half at the 8-minute mark. The game then turned into a back-and-forth affair with the score ultimately leading to a 78-78 tie with only 18 seconds left to play. The Falcons would beat the clock and convert on a last-second layup to clinch the 80-78 victory. The Sabres finished the game shooting 29-58 (.500) from the field including 5-8 (.625) from the three-point line. Junior Alex Manhardt led the way for Marian with 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Sophomores Tyrese Pinson and Ryan Biffert each put together a nice night chipping in 16 and 14 points, respectively. WAVERLY, Iowa - Marian University men's basketball (0-3, 0-0 NACC) was defeated by Iowa Wesleyan in the consolation game of the Buzz Levick Tournament 111-101 in double overtime.
The Tigers jumped early out early on the Sabres with a 9-2 run to open the game forcing a Sabre timeout. Marian would cut away the Tiger lead two with under 9 minutes left in the first half, but Iowa Wesleyan would take the lead to halftime 41-36. Marian opened the second half with four steals to take the lead 43-41. The Sabres controlled most of the second half pushing their lead as large as 11. The Tigers would not go away quietly, however, as they climbed back into the game knotting the score up at 85 with 23 seconds left in regulation. Iowa Wesleyan would get a good look at the rim for the game-winner but it would fall short and the game would head to overtime. In overtime, the Sabres and Tigers would trade baskets throughout the extra period with the lead not going further than five for either team. Again the Tigers would get another quality chance to claim the victory, but the shot would fall short forcing double overtime. The Sabres were only able to score seven points to the Tigers 17 in the second overtime as IW went 13-13 from the charity stripe to set the final score at 111-101. Junior Alex Manhardt led the Sabres in scoring with a season-high 28 points and eight rebounds. Junior Reggie Roemer and sophomore Tyrese Pinson helped out on the offensive side of the ball with 25 and 14 points, respectively. WAVERLY, IA – Marian University men's basketball (0-2, 0-0 NACC) were unable to complete a late comeback in the first game of the Buzz Levick Tournament against Wartburg College falling by 90-83 final.
The Knights jumped out on the Sabres early in the first half scoring 15 of the game's first 17 points forcing an early Sabre timeout. Marian used the break to bounce back and narrow the deficit to 10 with under four minutes left in the half, but Wartburg would take a 48-36 lead into halftime. Marian would cut away at the Knight lead in the second half eventually bringing the deficit down to single digits at 57-50 with 14:33 left in regulation. It was a back-and-forth affair throughout the rest of the second half with Marian down late with two minutes left to play 85-78. The Knight lead would be too great for the Sabres as the final score eventually settled at 90-83. Wartburg finished the game shooting 30-57 (.526) and 5-15 (.333) from behind the arc. The Sabres did well on the glass, however, outrebounding the Knights 40-33. Junior Reggie Roemer and sophomore Ryan Biffert led the way for the Sabres in scoring with 18 and 16 points, respectively, while freshman Charlie Witek also hit double-digits with 12 points. Marian will be back in action for the consolation game of the Buzz Levick Tournament where the Sabres will play Iowa Wesleyan Saturday, Nov. 19 with a 2 p.m. tip-off. FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (0-1, 0-0 NACC) couldn't hold off a second half charge from Beloit as the Sabres dropped their season opener 74-54.
Both teams traded baskets early in the first half with the Buccaneers jumping out on the Sabres by seven forcing an early Sabre timeout. Marian used the break to bounce back and tie the game at 26 with 6:13 left in the first half. The Buccaneers answered, however, and responded to the Sabre spurt by taking a 36-31 lead into halftime. Marian opened the second half strong scoring the first six points of the half to cut the lead to one, but the Buccaneers were able to hold off the charge and re-extended their lead. The Sabre offense would continue to cut into the lead but each time Beloit was able to hold off MU ultimately leading to a 74-54 final. Beloit finished the game shooting 30-57 (.526) including 8-17 (.471) from beyond the three-point line. The Buccaneers were also able to outrebound Marian 45-30, but the Sabre defense was able to force 24 turnovers. Junior Reggie Roemer and sophomore Tyrese Pinson led the way with a game-high 14 points, while Pinson also recorded five steals. Marian next hits the road for the Buzz Levick Tournament where the Sabres open with host Wartburg Friday, Nov. 18 with an 8 p.m. tip-off. |
