FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Defense and balanced scoring was again the recipe for the Marian University men's basketball team as it knocked off Northern Athletics Conference foe, Maranatha Baptist Bible College, 71-56, at home for its fifth straight win inside Sadoff Gymnasium, this evening, Jan. 29. The stifling Sabre defense held the Crusaders to just 36.4 percent from the field, including 3-of-18 from downtown en route to the victory. Marian featured nine players with five or more points, led by Sam Koslowski and Cody Veleke who recorded 12 points apiece. Maranatha's Joel Borchardt led all scorers with 14 points on 5-of-14 from the field. Marian improved to 13-8 overall, 8-4 in the NAC and swept the season series from the Crusaders with the win. Maranatha fell to 5-14 (1-11 NAC) with the loss. The Sabres led by as many as 13 points in the first half after holding Maranatha to just 32.1 percent (9-for-28) from the field, but only led by six points. The Crusaders made a furious 7-0 run to close out the half trailing 32-26. A Kyle Kutz jumper to open the second half made it a four-point game, but that would be as close as the Crusaders would get. Jake Coenen came off the bench and knocked down two of his three triples to build the Sabre lead back to double digits, 51-39. Leading comfortably with less than three minutes remaining, Alex Gomez then turned in a nifty reverse layup to give the Sabres their largest lead of the game, 71-51. Marian out-rebounded Maranatha, 40-34. Drew Binversie led the Sabres with nine boards (three offensive) to go with six points. Marian will close out the 2012-13 regular season home schedule this Saturday, Feb. 2, when it plays host to Concordia University Chicago at 4:15 p.m. The lone Sabre senior, Coenen, will be honored prior to the start of the game.
