RIVER FOREST, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's basketball team was in it until the end, but solid free throw shooting down the stretch proved clutch in propelling host Concordia University Chicago to a 64-56 Northern Athletics Conference victory this afternoon, Jan. 21. Sophomore Cody Veleke led the Sabres with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Jeff Harris added 15 points and Mike Keller chipped in 12. The Sabres went without a field goal during the final 4:03, but found themselves down only 57-55 with 1:36 left. However, from then on, the Cougars converted a Charles Gordon layup and five consecutive free throws to close out the win. CUC improves to 5-11 overall and 5-5 in the NAC, while the Sabres fall to 6-12 (3-7 NAC). Both teams shot 44 percent from the field and knocked down two three-pointers in the second half, but the Cougars got to the line 21 times, making 14 of those compared to just a 6-for-9 effort at the charity stripe for Marian. The Cougars got 25 points from Gordon, including 11 free throws on 17 attempts. He scored 20 points in the second half alone. Issa Avery added 11 points and seven rebounds, while Justin Hineman chipped in seven points and a game-high 14 rebounds. It was a two-point game at halftime as the Cougars took a 26-24 lead into the break. Avery led all scorers at halftime with 11, while Veleke added nine points for the Sabres. The loss snaps Marian's three-game winning streak. The Sabres will look to start a new streak when they play host to Edgewood College this Wednesday, Jan. 25. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. inside Sadoff Gymnasium. Comments are closed.
