RIPON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's basketball team couldn't overcome a hot-shooting Ripon College squad that shot nearly 60 percent for the game en route to an 82-65 win inside Wyman Gymnasium, this evening, Nov. 20.
Cody Veleke led three Sabres in double figures with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting. He also added a team-leading six rebounds and four blocks. Freshman standout Ty Sabin led the Red Hawks with a game-high 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting, while chipping in four rebounds, five assists and two steals. Ripon improved to 2-1 on the young season with the win, while Marian dropped to 1-1. The Sabres missed their first six shots and didn't convert their first basket until Brad Koth banked in a three from the top of the key nearly seven minutes into the contest. Still, Marian trailed Ripon by just four points, 8-4. Trailing 15-6 near the midway point of the first half, the Sabres put together an 11-2 run thanks to back-to-back-to-back three's by Veleke and Jeff Harris. The latter two came from Harris and tied the game at 17-17, forcing Ripon to call its first timeout of the game. The Red Hawks didn't cool down for long as they shot over 70 percent in the half. Kyle Loughrin led the hosts with 12 first-half points on 5-of-5 shooting and Ripon went 17-for-24 as a team in the opening frame, but led by just eight points, 38-30. In the second half, the Red Hawks seemed to provide an answer for every Sabre attempt at cutting into their lead. After six straight points from Sam Koslowski to cut the deficit to 42-38, Ripon responded with a 13-2 run to take a commanding 15-point lead and never looked back. Koslowski finished with 16 points, while Harris added 11, five rebounds and two steals off the bench. Ripon's Kyle Loughrin added 20 points, going 7-for-7 from the field, including 5-for-5 from the free throw line. David Klink chipped in 10 points. Ripon shot a blistering 21-for-24 from the charity stripe, while the Sabres struggled at 9-for-20. Marian will be back in action this Friday when it will take on Luther College in the opening game of the Bethel University Perkins Tip-Off Tournament in St. Paul. Friday's start time is set for 6 p.m. Comments are closed.
